Cathy Michele Sheafor

Head Coach

Email

Our Head Coach, Cathy Sheafor, started coaching youth swimmers at the age of 18 when she started a summer league team at her neighborhood pool.  Since then, Cathy has been instrumental in starting and running 2 year-round USA teams. Swim Charleston is the 3rd. She has experience coaching both summer league and year-round teams in North Carolina, Missouri, and South Carolina.  Over the years, she has developed a passion for using swimming as a vehicle for empowering young people to become youth leaders who serve in their community.  She believes strongly in combining research-based swimming skill instruction with character education.  She seeks to develop fast swimmers who are also good human beings. She is thrilled about this unique opportunity in Charleston to create a swim team that espouses the core principles found under the About tab on this website.

An educator and former attorney and a mother of two, Cathy ascribes to the belief that youth sports present an opportunity to teach important life skills in a FUN setting.  Swim Charleston balances fun with work, technical swimming instruction with opportunities for rigorous competition, dry land training and body awareness with water training, visual instruction with auditory instruction, and kinesthetically-focused training with intellectually-focused training.  Cathy uses a range of teaching methods to reach all learners and she particularly enjoys using videotaped instruction to meet individual needs.  In addition, Cathy believes that it is healthy (physically, mentally, and socially) for young swimmers to participate in various sports and activities so that they may find their life passion.  She hopes that swimming becomes one of these passions. Cathy’s beliefs about what can be taught through swimming are revealed in the attached piece she wrote in 2015 about what coaches should teach swimmers:  10-life-lessons-every-age-group-coach-teach-swimmers.

Cathy is currently a full-time volunteer coach.

Philip works at MUSC as a Research Assistant.  He has a crazy long list of hobbies, loves kids and loves swimming and he will be joining us about once a week at Ion.

Philip was born and raised in Kentucky where he competed with Wildcat Aquatics from age 9 on. He has coached high school swimming in Washington, DC and has volunteered to teach youth swimming in Nashville, TN.

Philip once tried to win the swimming leg of a triathlon, which did not bode well for the run.

He believes swimming in a uniquely difficult sport but that the benefits go far beyond the time spent in the pool.

Martha LeVeen grew up in New Jersey, where she started swimming competitively at the age of 4. Being the fourth child in a family of 5 dominant swimmers, she began year round swimming at age 6. After college, Martha moved to NYC to work in finance before eventually meeting her husband, Jeff and starting a family of 4. In 2015, Martha and her family decided to leave northeast winters behind to explore a different part of the east coast, and moved to Daniel lsland.  Its been a positive move for the entire family.  All 4 LeVeen kids are Sailfish!

Martha has an extremely competitive spirit and is incredibly fitness minded.  She loves to run and has been know to go out an win a 5k, or run a 1/2 marathon on a sunday because nothing much else was going on during that hour and a half.  She loves to watch swimming, figure out what motivates kids and ultimately help them improve not only their swim times, but their love for the sport while growing their sportsmanship.
