Cory Tague

Head Coach

Cory Tague is the proud, returning head coach of the Pacific Sands Penguins. He is a career teacher with 20 years of coaching experience. In 2017 he took the reigns of the program from renowned Pacific Sands and Edison High School coach, Matt Whitmore, who he swam and played water polo for in high school.
Cory previously served as a senior coach for the Green Valley Dolphins. During his 7 years with the Dolphins he was a part of a number of SCSC championships. He has served as the Head Varsity Swimming Coach at Edison High School for 5 years and Huntington Beach High School for 3 years. He was named the Orange County Register Swimming Coach of the Year in 2002 and his teams earned multiple Sunset League Championships. He also spent 13 seasons as a Lifeguard with California State Parks.
A summer swim league very similar to the SCSC planted the seeds of Cory's swimming career. He fell in love with swimming during the summer league and it grew into club participation where he competed at both Junior and Senior National competitions. He was a 4 year varsity swimmer at Edison High School and held records in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke that did not survive Tom Shields and Thomas Smith. After high school, Cory was a 17 time collegiate All-American, an individual NCAA champion in the 200 Backstroke, and the captain of a team NCAA championship.
Cory has been a teacher for 20 years and currently teaches math and science at the Orange County School of the Arts in Santa Ana. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Biology and a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership. Cory married his college sweetheart and fellow swimmer, Corene. They still swim together during master's practices in the early mornings at the Cabana Club. They are the proud parents of Cole (16), Chloe (13) and Cai (10), who are all on the Pacific Sands team.

Matt Whitmore

Senior Age Coach

Coach Whitmore attended Costa Mesa High School, Goldenwest College, Pepperdine and San Diego State.  He currently holds a California teaching credential as well as a Master’s degree.  In addition, he is also a Level III USA Swimming Certified Coach.
During the school year, he teaches English at Edison High School, where he coached Varsity Water polo and Swimming over the span of two decades.  As an athlete, he was a seven-time All-American selection.  He has been actively coaching water polo and swimming since 1986, being named Sunset League Coach of the Year 4 times, the most recent being 2002.
He lifeguarded for the City of Huntington Beach for 20 years, 16 of those years spent heavily involved with the Junior Lifeguard Program.
Coach Whitmore has a beautiful wife, Crystal, and three young sons, Taylor, Ethan, and Quinn.

Patricia P Smith

Senior Age Coach

Patty Smith grew up in Sacramento, California and began competitive swimming at age ten. In high school, she was nationally ranked in the 100 breaststroke and almost made the 1972 Olympic team. She attended Sacramento State University where she qualified for Nationals in the 100 breaststroke and the 100 butterfly. Patty discovered her love of coaching in high school where she worked with younger age group swimmers at a local swim club. While in college, she became the head coach at a local high school and also moved up to the head coaching position at her local swim club. Coach Smith's dream was to coach at the college level. While working on her Masters Degree at Arizona State University, she became one of the assistant coaches for the nationally ranked Arizona State University Swimming Team.

After graduation, Coach Smith went to the University of Arkansas as the head coach for the women's swim team. In her four years there, the team moved up to 10th in the nation. Missing the sunshine of California and the energy of the high school athletes, she returned to California. Before joining the staff at Mesa, Coach Smith taught science and coached swimming at Savanna High School in Anaheim and at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana.

During her tenure here at Mesa, the boys swim team has never lost the league title, the girls have only lost once, and both teams have qualified numerous swimmers for CIF. In addition to her duties as swim coach, Mrs. Smith currently serves as the Senior Level Head Coach for Surf City Aquatics and has just joined the Penguins Swim Team. She and her husband, Russ, live in Huntington Beach with their two children, Chris and Nicole.
