As Head Coach and Owner of the SEVA swim team, Dave Henderson is one of the most accomplished USA Swimming coaches in Virginia. With a 30-year track record of success, Dave combines old-school values with the latest state-of-the-art training techniques. A past recipient of the “Outstanding Service Award” from USA Swimming/Virginia Swimming, Dave is an eight-time Virginia Zone Team coach. After growing up in Northern California, Dave’s family moved to Williamsburg, where he graduated from Lafayette High. Dave swam collegiately for Long Beach State in California, before transferring to Old Dominion University. Dave worked his way through ODU as a swim coach, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management from Old Dominion in 1986. Dave began coaching at Fort Eustis Swim Team (FTE) in 1981. In 1984, he was promoted to Head Coach of the FTE team. In his 19 years coaching Fort Eustis, he led the team to several Top 50 National rankings and first-place team finishes at both the Va Age Group Championships and Va Senior Championships. In 2000, when the Fort Eustis team was disbanded (due to cut in Army sponsorship) Dave founded SEVA -- realizing his lifelong dream of founding, owning and running his own swim team. In 11 years as head coach and owner of SEVA, Dave has led the team to several Top 3 state finishes at both the Age Group and Senior levels. Dave and his wife, Doris, recently celebrated 24 years of marriage. Their two sons are both long-time SEVA swimmers, as well as excelling in other sports and school activities and academically. When he is away from the pool and not involved in family activities, Dave’s passions include rooting for his favorite baseball team, the San Francisco Giants, stamp collecting and baseball card collecting. Dave has attended five different Olympic Games -- the Summer Olympics in Munich in 1972, Montreal in 1976, Moscow in 1980, Los Angeles in 1984 and Seoul, South Korea in 1988. Dave is most proud of the fact that over 300 of his former swimmers have gone on to swim at the college level.
