Bob Herlinger

TEAM HEAD COACH - Massad Y (SR)

ASCA LEVEL 5 CERTIFICATION.  Bob is very proud of his hometown, Baltimore, MD where he went to Archbishop Curley HS and then graduated from Elon College, NC.  His loving family consists of his wife Joni, whom he met while coaching in Lancaster, PA and his sons Colin, and Brandan.  They both are totally absorbed in soccer.  As for his coaching career, Bob is beginning his 44thyear of coaching.  He has coached many levels of swimmers, ranging from developmental to Olympic Trial Qualifiers. He has coached 34 individual swimmers to 108 Top 16/10 times, 124 Top 16 relays, 78 Junior National qualifiers, 15 Senior National Swimmers, 1 National Team swimmer – ranked 21st in the world in the 200m Breaststroke, 1 National Junior Team swimmer – ranked 25th in the world in the 100m Breaststroke, 1 National Youth Team member, and 11 Olympic Trial swimmers – with 2 swimmers placing in Semi-Finals.  In the summer of 2005, as a team, the RAYS came in 8th at YMCA Nationals; in 2009, our boys’ team came in 4th place, our best ever finish.  He has been with the RAYS since 2001 and has built the team from less than 90 to 400 swimmers.  Early in his career, Bob coached at Dunbar HS in Baltimore City, a couple of YMCAs, and numerous summer league teams while leading one to them to the Maryland State Championships.  Following his early success, he coached at the nationally renowned North Baltimore Aquatic Club for 3 years.  Next, he became the head coach of Lancaster Aquatic Club, PA for nine years.  He built Lancaster from 70 to 160 swimmers, and they scored at 13 straight Junior Nationals.  Then, Bob spent 4 years at Dynamo Swim Club out of Atlanta, where he built one of their satellite pools from 80 to 130 swimmers and from 1 Junior National qualifier in 1 event to 6 National qualifiers in 20 events. While at Team Foxjet in Minnesota, 1997-2001, he accomplished 6 consecutive state championships.  During the 2000 summer Junior Nationals-West, his girls’ team finished fourth with the team finishing sixth overall.  Bob was also named the 1999 Minnesota Senior Coach of the Year.

Andy Bertolet

Head Site Coach - Rosner Y (SR & AG1)

Andy is also our Head Age Group Coach.  Andy has come to the Stingrays after being a head age group coach in north Stafford for the last eight years. During this stint, Andy has coached multiple age group champions, with many athletes achieving quad and triple A time standards. Previous to moving to Virginia with his wife, Kate, he has coached at all levels of the sport from developmentals to the NCAA. As a swimmer, Andy was a four year high school all-American, Pennsylvania state champ in the 500 free, and qualified for US Senior Nationals in seven events. Andy also enjoys, cooking, reading and going to the beach with Kate, his three sons(Lowell, Miles and Brooks).
 

Dalton R Herendeen

Dalton was born in Elkhart Indiana where he first discovered his love for the water which jump started his career into coaching.  In addition to being a top level collegiate swimmer, Dalton also represented the United States as a member of the US Paralympic team. In 2012 he was a member of the London Paralympic Team and also the 2016 Rio Paralympic Team.  He moved to Fredericksburg to train for the 2016 Rio Olympics.  Dalton's coaching background consists of coaching college for 3 years, helping run swim clinics, summer league coach and has been a member of the RAYS staff for 2 years.  Furthermore, Dalton has worked with the NCAA to further promote the inclusion of disabled sports and athletes at the collegiate level and is also a motivational speaker. 

Anthony Pedersen

ASCA LEVEL 3 CERTIFICATION.  Anthony is born and raised in the Virginia.  He grew up swimming for OCCS, FBST and QDD all in the Northern Virginia area.  After High School Anthony swam one year at Mary Washington College (Now UMW).  Anthony has coached at every level of the sport from developmental to a swimmer at the Pan-Pacific Games.  Prior to his time with the RAYS Anthony was the Head Coach for Sienna Plantation Aquatics(SPA) in Houston, TX.  While with SPA Anthony developed the senior program and within 2 years placed 2nd at Gulf Senior Champs.  He was also a Head Site Coach for Swim Neptune in Phoenix, AZ and a Head Site Coach for NCAP in Warrenton, VA.  Anthony has worked with numerous swimmers who have achieved Junior National, Sectional, National Top 10 along with Quad A and Triple A times.  Besides swimming Anthony enjoys spending time with his wife Therese and his son Cooper.

Joshua K Friedel

Asst Site Coach - Rosner Y (AG2 & JR)

Josh grew up in Fredericksburg, Virginia where he first started swimming with the Curtis Park Seahawks at the age of 8. Josh has been part of the RAYS Swim Team family since he was 10 years old. He also was a four year varsity letterman for the Mountain View Wildcats and a four year varsity letterman for the Florida State Seminoles. Some of his swimming accomplishments include 2012 Olympic Trial Finalist, 2009 Junior National Team member, All ACC Swimmer, Virginia State Champion in the 100 back, and three time YMCA National Champion. After spending four years in Tallahassee, he is excited to be back in Virginia to be working with the RAYS swimmers.

Connor M Muncie

Head Site Coach - KGY (AG1 & JR)

Connor comes to the Rays after graduating from VCU with his master's degree in Health and Physical Education.  Connor grew up in King George, Virginia where he was a four time varsity letterman for the Foxes.  Connor also was the founding coach for the Hopyard Hammerheads, an RSL swim team, where he was the Head Coach for the last 4 years.  Connor also has 4 years of year round coaching experience coaching with teams in the Richmond area.  Connor is a Health and Physical Education teacher at A.G. Wright Middle School.  In his spare time, Connor enjoys fishing, spending time outside, and watching his favorite sport teams.  Connor is very excited to move back to the area where he is from and start coaching for the RAYS!

Stephanie B Hensen

Stephanie Hensen grew up in Cold Spring Harbor, New York.  Stephanie started her swimming career at the age of five with the Huntington Y Bluefish year-round swim team.  She fell in love with the sport and stayed with the Bluefish until she graduated from high school. During her teen years, Stephanie lifeguarded and coached her summer league team. Stephanie continued her swimming career with Mary Washington College, where she swam all four years under Paul Richards and achieved All American status. 

After college, Stephanie became an elementary school teacher at Hartwood Elementary, where she has taught for the last 25 years.  During this time, she has swum on a Master’s Swim team and participated in numerous triathlons. Stephanie has also coached various summer league swim teams, including Fox Point and Curtis Park.

Stephanie is married to her wonderful husband Kevin and has three children, Brooke, Cole and Chase.    Brooke is a level 9 gymnast with the Royals and the boys both swim for the RAYS and play travel baseball.  Watching her children swim for the RAYS has inspired her to become active in the swimming community again.  This will be her 8th year coaching with the RAYS and she looks forward to an amazing season with her group of swimmers.

Matt Cunningham

Assistant Coach - King George Y (AG2)

Matt Cunningham hails from the local area, living both in Fredericksburg and King George.  He swam for King George and James Monroe in high school.  He started out as a life guard at the King George YMCA and was found to be skilled in teaching the children how to swim.  After this, he again expanded his area of expertise to water exercise classes and assisting with the King George HS Swim Team.  He is an assistant coach again this year.  Last summer, Matt left the area for Apopka, FL, to be "Activity Head" for the YMCA's Camp Wewa's swim lessons and also worked as a camp counselor. He is excited to help the Massad Y Developmental swimmers this year.

Jennifer C Leupold

Jenny is a native of the Washington DC area.  She attended Winston Churchill HS and swam for Lakewood CC growing up.  She was second in the state for Maryland Cross Country and all State in track and field.  She attended Virginia Tech (Go Hokies!!!) where she ran cross country and indoor/ outdoor track.  She loves and cares for her husband and four awesome children.  Jenny is actively involved in the Triathlon community participating in many sprint, olympic and half- ironman distances.  She is currently an instructor for the YMCA swim program as well.  Jenny enjoys gardening, and running with her dogs in her spare time.  She is so excited to work with the Rays developmental program.  Go Rays!!

Lee Bessette

Assistant Coach - Massad Y (AG2)

Lee grew up in Dorval, Quebec, Canada, a suburb of Montreal and a hotbed of swimming and aquatics. She started swimming competitively when she was 8, started coaching and lifeguarding when she was 16, and has continued to both swim and coach off and on ever since. Most recently, she was an assistant coach for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps DIII swimming and diving team, with the team winning three consecutive SCIAC women's championships during that time. 

 
Lee also have a PhD in Comparative Literature and has been teaching at the collegiate level for more than 15 years. Currently, she is an Instructional Technology Specialist at the University of Mary Washington and teaches in the Digital Studies program. 
 
Lee has two kids, Cassie and Leo, who both started swimming competitively this summer for the Marlins, with Leo continuing on to swim this year with the RAYS while Cassie will return to ballet. The family has only been living in Fredericksburg since December 2015, but we are enjoying the area and look forward to becoming more involved with the community generally and the RAYS more specifically.
 

Shannon Coryell

Shannon Coryell graduated last spring with a Bachelors in English and Cum Laude Honors. Now, she is a graduate student at the University of Mary Washington getting a Masters degree in Secondary Education. She is currently a student teacher at Ni River Middle school for 7th grade English. Shannon swam all four years for UMW and went to the NCAA Championship in 2016 for the 200 Free Relay. She swam on two relays, the 400 Free and the 200 Free, that broke Capital Athletic Conference and school records. This is Shannon's second year with the RAYS, but she has five years of experience as the head assistant coach for a summer league team in Chesterfield County. Shannon is very excited to work with the Age Group 1 and 2 and Developmental swimmers.

Becca Thacker

This will be Becca's 2nd year coaching for the RAYS.  She is coaching Development at Jeff Rouse Swim and Sport Center.  Becca swam for RSL, QDD, and NSHS, while also qualifying for states.  She has been a WSI Instructor for 7 years and has 20 years experience in teaching swim lessons here in Stafford County.  

Bianca K West

Assistant Coach - JRSSC (DEV & HS Prep)

Bianca grew up in Stafford, Virginia where she learned how to swim on the Austin Ridge Rapids Swim team. In 2011, she became an assistant coach for the Rapids, and in 2013 she became the head coach. Bianca attended Old Dominion University and earned a degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education. While attending ODU she was in charge of the swim lesson program for three years that was ran in their recreation center. Bianca also holds many Red Cross certifications including her WSI, WSIT, and LGI. Currently she is pursuing her master’s degree in Elementary Education online through Old Dominion. She is very excited to be working with the Rays this year!

Patrick Sterling Bogue

I started swimming in Greer, South Carolina before moving to Fredericksburg. In Fredericksburg I swam for the College Heights Gators for eight years as well as coached the team for six years. During my high school years I swam all four years, becoming a captain my senior year. Senior year I was a part of two record breaking relays along with Coach Michael Camper. In recent years I have been the assistant coach for James Monroe High School for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, as well as an assistant coach for the Grafton Dolphins this 2015 season. I also work coaching a US Masters swim group based out of the American Family Fitness club in Fredericksburg.

Mary Flinn

Mary is from Stafford, Virginia where she first discovered her love for swimming with the Aquia Harbour Dolphins at the age of 6.  Mary has been part of the RAYS since she was 12 years old.  She attended Brooke Point High School with a four year varsity letter and continued her swimming career at Radford University her freshman and sophomore year.  After two years at Radford, she transferred to James Madison University for their Elementary Education program. Continuing her swimming career, she was the head coach for the Aquia Harbour Dolphins for two summers. After coaching for the RAYS last summer, she is excited to be back this fall!

Samantha Kay Levy

This is Sam's 3rd year with the RAYS.  She has worked with developmental, Age Group 1, and Age Group 2.  Sam comes from Richmond Virginia, her home town of 21 years. She has been competitively swimming since the age of 13 and swam on a USA team in Richmond, the YGR Tritons. She attended Mills E. Godwin High School. She has also been head coach for a local summer swim team back and Richmond and has been giving lessons for several years. Sam loves children and enjoys helping them reach their full potential. In 2013 Sam qualified for south east regionals where she qualified for finals and made top 16 in 100 backstroke. She also swam her freshman year at Ferrum College before transferring to the University of Mary Washington where she is currently a biology major.

I started swimming when I was 10 years old for a local summer league swim team.  From there, I joined Regency Park and swam with them for 10 years.  During high school, I swam 2 yeras and Jr. Assisted for 2 years.  After I graduate, I coached my first summer league swim team as a head coach, and I now look forward to coaching with the RAYS.

Brandon Spence

Brandon grew up in Germantown, Maryland before moving to Fredericksburg, where he found his niche in the sport of swimming. He began his swimming career by taking swim lessons, attending various stroke and turn clinics, and eventually joining the Woodcliffe Wahoos summer league team. Fast forward a few years and he found himself swimming for the Rays, where he moved rapidly through Age Groups 1 and 2 to the Juniors group within his first year. He swam for Stafford Senior High School varsity team all four years. Brandon still has his passion for swimming and is hoping to pass that along to the swimmers on the Rays.

Alexandra E Bentz

Alexandra grew up in the Fredericksburg area, and has been swimming for thirteen years through various summer, year-round, high school, and college swim teams. She started as a volunteer swim coach for the Dahlgren Sharks at age fifteen, and has since proceeded to be an assistant coach for the Dahlgren Sharks, and the Rappahannock Raiders, along with being a coach for the Masters Swimming program at the King George Y, and a swim lesson teacher.  In high school, she was able to qualify for the state swim team the three years she attended King George High School, and is currently studying at the Univeristy of Mary Washington where she is pursuing a major in education and continues to swim.
