I am originally from the state of Iowa where I
lived for 13 years. My family then moved to the Twin Cities, where
I was a three sport athlete. Following graduation, I went on to
college at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, graduating with a
Post Secondary Education degree, majoring in English and minoring
I have been a competitive triathlete and
duathlete for over 20 years, completing distances from Sprint to
Ironman. Currently I have moved on to Endurance Mountain Bike
Racing and competing at distances up to 100 miles.
I own and operate my own Endurance Coaching
Business called M2 Coaching. I have been guiding endurance athletes
for 6 years in their pursuits of triathlon, running, road cycling,
mountain biking, and cyclocross. During that period I have worked
with couch to 5k athletes, up to professionals. I help in all areas
of competition, including, nutrition, strength training, race
planning, stretching, etc…
I am married to my wife Erin, who is also an
Endurance Athlete and CRNA. We have 2 children, Scout and Willem.
Scout is currently a member of the WYNS Program.
Melissa F Springer
Coach Springer grew up in Oregon, where her love of the water developed. By the age of 8, she was begging her parents to let her swim for the local team. Little did they know, that this was the beginning of a lifelong passion - competitive swimming.
Springer swam with the Tualatin Hills Swim Club as an age grouper and the Multnomah Athletic Club as a senior swimmer. She continued swimming thru her freshman year in college at Brigham Young University.
She has coached various teams over the last 12 years, including middle school, high school, country club and usa club teams. As Springer has moved over the years, she has been given the opportunity to coach and swim in the following states - Oregon, Utah, Texas, Michigan and now Wisconsin. Currently, she coaches both the boys and girls teams at DC Everest High School. Her experiences in these different swimming environments and communities brings a wealth of knowledge to the Y program.
Katrina M Emerson
Kendra M Frisinger
I have always grown up with a love of swimming however an early
injury kept me from swimming competitively. In 2007, I moved back
to Wausau and was asked to teach Swimming lessons for the Wausau
Tide. Then I started helping coaching at Tide working primarily
with the 10 & Under swimmers and helping out at swim meets.
Shortly after graduation, I became the swim lessons coordinator for
the team and have since been doing that and coaching. My love of
teaching isn't just in the water, as I'm also an assistant teacher
at South Mountain Elementary School working with Children on the
Kathie started swimming at the age of 5 and joined the
Neenah YMCA swim team at the age of 8. Swimming has been a
large part of her life ever since. Kathie has three
children and all swam for the Y. She has been connected
with the team as a swim mom or swim coach for the past 20 years and
has also taught swim lessons.
My coaching philosophy stems from efforts to overcome the
humdrum of counting 1" tiles on the bottom of the pool. I swam
competitive since the age of 5. I began coaching USA in
1989 with the Kenosha Barracuda Swim Team (Which now has become
PX3). I run my own business but my chlorine addiction keeps
me coming to the pool to coach. I've coached for YMCA,
Masters and USA teams in Green Bay and YMCA and Special Olympics in
Wausau. I've been with WYNS/ WAYS/GDS since 2001. I have coaches
all ages and ability levels but may best fit with
theprobably Mid to upper age groups. I believe in shaping
habits of sportsmanship and work ethic as well as preparation for
anything the world can throw at you. Hobbies include Boating,
Fishing, hunting, biking and couch potato if the Packers are
"My own competitive swimming history includes starting as a youngster swimming for your typical suburban subdivision summer team and continuing on with age group swimming, high school, and college swimming. And, I continue to swim competitively in open water swims such as Teal Lake in the UP and Point to LaPointe up in Bayfield.
I started to coach co-ed high school swimming while finishing grad school in Cincinnati and was introduced to the highly competitive nature of Ohio high school swimming. I’ve also been fortunate to have coached a year for Rhinelander Swim Club (one of my alma mater swim clubs!) but have been coaching with Wausau YMCA swimming ever since 2002.
As I tell my swimmers, my job is to make them a better swimmer and hopefully we can get there in a fun way that isn’t too painful.“
I grew up in a small town in Southern Wisconsin and started swimming on the summer team at 8 years old. I have always loved swimming and continue to swim on a regular basis and compete in triathlons. My two daughters Erin (9) and Allison (7) are on the team. I am also Physical Therapist at Marshfield Clinic Stettin Center in Wausau. As a coach, I enjoy passing on my love of swimming and helping kids enjoy this life-long sport.
Billy began swimming in elementary school when he and his siblings started lessons at Wausau Tide Swim Club. In 2012, Billy was a WI state champion in the 100 butterfly. He continued to swim at St. Olaf College, and earned All-American titles at Division III NCAAs in 2013 and 2014. Using his vast knowledge of swimming thru his competitive experiences, Billy began coaching in 2015, he is excited to join the YMCA coaching staff.
Kris P Holmgreen
I began coaching 13 years ago and fell in love with it as soon as I stepped on deck. The first coaching job I had was with the Southwest Aquatic Team (SWAT) in Milwaukee. Since then I have coached middle school (Horace Mann), multiple high school teams ( Greenfield/Greendale, Wausau East) and with the Wausau Tide. The privilege of helping swimmers achieve their goals keeps me going year after year, and pushes me to keep learning. I enjoy finding ways to be better at what I do to help these kids.
Melissa P Nieuwenhuis
I was born and raised in the Wausau area and swam competitively
since the age of 11. I participated in the YMCA swim team as well
as the DC Everest swim team, and graduated high school in 2017. I
currently coach the DC Everest Middle School team and WYNS, while
also attending college at UW Marathon County. You might also catch
me on the lifeguard stand at the Aspirus YMCA (protecting my pools
patrons of course!). Even though I am a fresh coach, I know my
skills well because I was in the same shoes as the swimmer's only a
year ago (coached by the one and only Melissa Springer!). I made
lifelong friends through swimming, learned the value of hard work
and dedication, and got killer biceps as well. I look forward to
watching my swimmers grow up and accomplish their goals, and cannot
wait to see where it leads them!
Riyah R Rudeen
Growing up as the daughter of a swim coach, Riyah has been
swimming her whole life. She officially joined the Wittenberg Area
Swim Program at age 6 and later swam for the Wausau Tide Swim Club.
Riyah is now currently a senior swimmer for WYNS. She also swam for
the D.C. Everest Varsity Swim Team. You can find her doing various
jobs around the YMCA from lifeguarding, to teaching swim lessons
and coaching. She loves the connections she can make with her
swimmers by being both a coach and a current senior team member.
Riyah will graduate from D.C. Everest in the Spring of 2018 and has
committed to continuing her education and swimming career at
Northern Michigan University.
