Favorite Stroke: Butterfly

Howdy. friends! When I was 6  I was diagnosed with t hyroid cancer, so naturally being on a swim team throughout my adolecent years helped me over come the struggles I had when it came to things as simple as breathing. Swimming played a secretly huge role in my life until I turned 18 and started teaching, which was  when I knew I found my passion. I love watching people of all ages go from  saying, "I can't" to "watch me."  It's such a huge stepping stone that feels almost seemless, and I love being able to help someone go thro ugh that. I love to read, do yoga and cook, but needless to say, swimming has taken over more than half my life. <3

I first learned how to swim at the YMCA when I was five years old. At the age of eight, I joined the Chester Dolphins summer swim team. This was my first swim team experience and I immediately fell in love with the sport. Before swimming, I participated in dance, gymnastics, and soccer. It wasn’t long before swimming became my favorite sport. In 2012, I began swimming at the Chester YMCA year-round. In 2013, I swam with the Poseidon swim team. While I enjoyed this experience, I missed the YMCA and returned in January of 2015. I have volunteered with the younger swimmers at CRA and the YMCA swim team for several years. I love teaching and encouraging kids as they learn to swim and improve in all areas.

As a youth, I swam on the swim team and to this day it continues to be a passion of mine. I have taught swimming lessons here at the Chester Y since summer of 2016 and my daughter Katie was an assistant coach here in the past. I wanted to help give back to a program that has helped me so much and that is why I decided to be an assistant coach. My favorite stroke is freestyle, and I really enjoy participating in and watching the swimmers swim their relays. My most memorable moment of swim team was when I was cheering for my daughter, Katie, at a meet while she was swimming in an event. Seeing Katie swim that day brought back a memory of me swimming and my mom cheering me on.

From swimming 25 yards at three years old, summer swim at five, to year round swim team from the age of six, ever since I can remember swimming has been my passion.  I swam year round for nine years with the Columbia Clippers, Columbia Aquatics Association in Maryland and upon moving to Virginia I joined NOVA for 2 years.  I wanted to coach swim team because swimming has always been a part of me and I really look up to some of my old coaches! :)

Prior to swimming, I was dancing at the age of 9. I soon tried out swimming at 10 years old and loved it ever since. I started swimming during the summer at Sherwood Hills and soon went to Quest for 3 years. During those 3 years I also ran cross country and did track and field. After, I soon went to the Chester YMCA to continue swimming after leaving Quest. I have been swimming with the Chester YMCA ever since. Swimming has been my favorite sport since the age of 10, and I’m so happy to be able to help and teach others to improve their swimming skills and techniques.
