Middle School Camp
(this is a team hosted event)
Middle School Camp
August 12-17, 2019
This is the best part of the OSHY program. A week in Ely, MN swimming, hiking, running, kayaking, camping, team building, and confidence building. It is a tremendous growing experience for the participants. Some learn to function independently, some learn to conquer fear and doubts, some learn to lead. All learn to function as a part of something bigger than themselves. It is challenging, fun, and rewarding for all, it is life-changing for some.
Camp is held at Coach Jay’s family canoe base in Ely, MN. Lee, Jay’s mom, bought and built the place in the 1960’s and ran a canoe outfitting business, guiding and outfitting groups in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area when he was a kid. The camp is located on Cedar Lake, about 5 miles from Ely, right on the Canadian border. For the last 19 years the OSHY team and the Oshkosh YMCA have been running camps there.
To be eligible to go a swimmer needs to have completed 6th, 7th or 8th grade this year OR be entering 6th grade next year and swimmers need to have completed a 500 in 7:30 or faster.
Parents – we need you
We need leaders / drivers / chaperones. The experiences that the kids have don’t happen without adults willing to facilitate them. Adult leaders -drive, ensure safety during activities, help with meals,… We would love to have anyone help. We have had parent with kids at the camp help, parents with kids who have aged out of middle school camp help, we have had parents of kids not yet old enough for camp help. Being a leader at camp is a wonderful way to make a difference in the lives of a lot of young people.
The cost of the week is $325. In addition to this the kids need a little money for souvenirs.
Sign-up online. Swimmers sign up like a meet, Leaders/ drivers sign-up like a job sign-up. (Young leaders - HS aged swimmers talk directly to Jay instead of using the job sign-up) The deadline for sign-up is June 1 to give us enough time to coordinate leaders / drivers / vehicles.
