Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policy
Hello Fleet Families,
USA Swimming has updated their Safe Sport policy and education requirements as part of their continued commitment to safeguarding our athletes. Cypress Fairbanks Swim Club, as a member of USA Swimming, will also be adopting the Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policy (MAAPP). Our top priority continues to be keeping our athletes safe. No form of abuse, including child sexual abuse, has a place in our sport.
The enhancements stem from requirements imposed by the U.S. Center for SafeSport (the “Center”). The Center is the separate, independent organization that oversees all sexual misconduct reports in the Olympic and Para-Olympic movement. The Center is also responsible for creating requirements in the areas of policy, education and training for every National Governing Body (NGB) in the Movement. USA Swimming, as an NGB, must follow the Center’s requirements.
For several years, USA Swimming has either required club policies, enacted national rules, or recommended best practices in most of these areas. This means that MAAPP requirements should be familiar to Cypress Fairbanks Swim Club members, but there will be a few changes that affect how we operate.
One of the biggest changes from this policy is the new membership requirement for our 18 & Over athletes. Starting June 23, 2019, all 18 & Over athletes will be required to take USA Swimming’s Athlete Protection Training annually to maintain a member of USA Swimming. 30 Days before each swimmer’s 18thbirthday, they will receive an email from USA Swimming with directions about the Athlete Protection Training and how to take the course. If you fail to take the course before your 18thbirthday, or if you fail to renew your Athlete Protection Training after a year, your USA Swimming registration will become inactive and you will not be able to participate in USA Swimming competitions until the course has been completed. Your entries will also not be accepted to future meets (Sectionals, Nationals, etc) if your membership is not up to date.
There are also several other changes that will affect:
- One-On-One Interaction (meetings & phone calls)
- Electronic Communication (text messaging, email, and all social media)
- Social Media
- Team Travel
- Locker Rooms
- College recruiting
Currently, this policy is self monitored by the teams and LSC's (GU Swimming). Please follow the link to register to sign the document electronically, acknowledging that you have read and accept the policy on behalf of your family and all of your swimmers.
