It has been over nine years since we lost a husband, father and true friend killed by a drunk driver while on his morning bicycle ride.
Michael Fish was an instrumental leader of the YSF Barracudas and a founding member of the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC). As our Head Official for both USA Swimming and YMCA Swimming, we lost a valuable asset and mentor. Michael spent many hours on the pool deck and classroom mentoring parents on the finer points of being a good and compassionate official. His wisdom and vision helped us establish a strong foundation that has assisted our team's growth.
Michael was the upmost multitasker. He was an Official, a YSF Barracudas Parent Advisory Committee board member, and Optometry student at NOVA Southeastern University. His most important role was being a father of two of our former swimmers, Jared and Hannah, and a caring and loving husband to our founder and former PAC President Kathy. His loss affected the lives of the whole YSF Barracudas swim team and the YMCA community from as far north as Albany, NY to the south to Key West, and from Coast to Coast.
Michael enriched our lives and was the first to offer help. He always looked for solutions.
We have established our Swim Meet in the month of September as a tribute to Michael Fish's life and values. In 2016, the YSF Barracudas PAC board and the YMCA of south Florida established a fund for two schoolarships to benefit YSF Barracudas Seniors.
In addition, the YMCA of South Florida donate a portion from the collected meet entry fees, to contribute with the MADD Organization, making a monetary donation to the MADD for Fish Team, lead by Kathy Fish, as part of the Walk Like MADD 5K Dash held every year in Fort Lauderdale.
Michael Fish can never be again with us, but his legacy will live on.
