Western Zone Diversity Equity Inclusion Camp/Summit

Aug 14, 2021
July, 2 2021

Description

The Western Zone Diversity Equity Inclusion (DEI) Camp and Summit has been rescheduled and will be held on Saturday, August 14. The event will be virtual this year, via Zoom - and won't count against future eligibility to attend an in-person DEI camp. NM LSC can "send" (sponsor/pay for) 4 athletes (plus 2 alternates in case plans fall through). They will also be sponsoring two non-athlete volunteers.

- Featuring USA Swimming's Russell Mark and Facilitated by TruClusion

- Dual sessions on stroke technique from USA Swimming's High Performance Consultant, Russell Mark

- Facilitated conversations from the perspective of various social identity groups by TruClusion

- Join the conversation on barriers in the sport of swimming and how teams, LSC's and the Western Zone can help bring those barriers down

Applications are due July 2 and the LSC will select those attendees they will sponsor by July 16. Since the event is virtual this year, anyone who wishes to attend but is not chosen for sponsorship by the LSC may pay their own way at $35 for Non-Athletes and $15 for Athletes. For additional details or questions, please contact NM DEI Chair, Doug Forbes ([email protected]).

Athlete Age: Camp participants should be 13-16 years of age at the time of the camp. Athlete Representatives attending the Summit should be between 13-18 years of age at the time of the summit.

Preferred Qualifications: Athletes must have an "A" time in one or more events in any course either as a 13-14 or a 15-16 year-old athlete. Designate the time standard achieved and age on the application.

Secondary Qualifications: If an LSC has no athletes apply who meet the preferred qualifications then the LSC may select athletes who have qualified in at least one individual event in their local LSC championship meet (Junior Olympics) in either SCY or LCM seasons.

Athletes must represent an underrepresented community and/or an ethnically underrepresented population that is less than 10% of the current USA Swimming membership. These populations can include: African American, Hispanic, Asian or Pacific Islander, Native American, LGBTQ+ and others.
