Dear Redding Swim Team Families,

I am reaching out to let you know about a special member of our TEAM and to ask for your support.11-year-old swimmer Hailey Bolen needs our help.   A fund has been established through Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) for Hailey and volunteers are raising money in support of Hailey to assist with her transplant-related expenses.  Please read the following story about Hailey and her family as compiled and written by her closest supporters.

In the spring of 2020, Hailey was hospitalized at UC Davis Children’s hospital. She was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune condition. This condition, Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibodies (ANCA) associated vasculitis, attacked Hailey’s lungs and kidneys. Fortunately, Hailey’s lungs recovered. However, her kidneys did not. For the past year, she has endured 10-12 hours of nightly peritoneal dialysis, while anxiously awaiting her kidney transplant.

Hailey’s father Tyler is a Forest Service Officer and a US Army Veteran Her mother Teresa is a schoolteacher who has had to take the last year off to give Hailey the 24 hour a day continuous support that she requires to battle this illness.   She works tirelessly to maintain Hailey’s ongoing medical appointments (between Stanford and U.C. Davis), shipments of dialysis supplies (50+ boxes shipped to their house monthly).  She manages Hailey’s medical routine from home, including peritoneal dialysis, on top of caring for the other 3 children.  To say that Tyler and Teresa are dedicated parents is an understatement. Tyler and Teresa will do whatever it takes to heal Hailey. Meanwhile, they continue to provide necessary care, time and attention to Hailey’s siblings:  her twin Hunter, and brothers James (age 9) and Joshua (age 4).

Hailey will need her first transplant this year and is expected to have subsequent transplants during her lifetime.  COTA will help ease the burden and stress of the associated costs of these procedures as well as support in her recoveries. Our goal is to raise $60,000 for COTA to support Hailey.

I wanted to share a little history on this family’s influence and legacy with the Redding Swim Team.  Hailey’s grandmother (Nancy Bolen) was my first President of the Redding Swim Team when I arrived 25 years ago.  Dad Tyler and Aunt Shannon both swam for me many years ago.  The swim team you see today, the swim team we value, and the swim team your children enjoy has been greatly influenced by this family.  Let us help this precious little girl today and preserve her future.

The Redding Swim Team will make its own donation to COTA for Hailey Bolen.  I hope you each of you can also help support her lifelong struggle today by either attending the July 24th swim meet fundraiser or by making a donation to COTA on behalf of Hailey.

Here is how you can help:

  • Attend the Swim Meet at Sun Oaks on Saturday, July 24 at 9:00AM. $10.00 per child.  To register please email: [email protected]

  • Donate directly to COTA.  COTA is a certified non-profit organization, and all donations are tax deductible.  Click on the link to COTA and directly donate with their organization.
