SVY Prelims/Finals Challenge

Feb 8, 2014 (03:00 AM)

Description

Last year, the league sprung the fact that 11-12’s would compete in a prelims/finals format for Y States on us half-way through the season.  Instead of scrambling to try and adjust our meet schedule, we created a one-day simulated prelims/finals opportunity that everyone from the group participated in to gain experience racing in such a format prior to States.  The kids did a GREAT job with it, our parents came through as you ALWAYS do, and the result was over 75% better times in finals swims at Y States last year from SVY.  I attribute a lot of that success to the expectations we set based on this experience.

This year’s P/F Challenge will be on Saturday 2/8.  Prelims will be swum at Bridgewater from 9:00-11:00 AM (arrival at 8:45, warm-up 9:00-9:15, start 9:20) and finals will be swum at RVCC from 5:00-7:00 PM (arrival at 4:45, warm-up 5:00-5:15, start 5:20).  I would like to have a brief swimmer/parent meeting after, from 7:00-7:30 PM, I will spend 10 minutes or so going over a few things about States and will answer questions for up to 20 minutes.  If it’s 7:30 and questions are still being asked I will end there so everyone can get out of there.

Each session will be broken up into thirds, with a 5-8 minute cool down in between.  Each swimmer will be entered in one event in each portion of the session, and will be required to swim exactly the same events at night.  At Y States, the relays are contested at the beginning of the PRELIMS session, so everyone will be swimming a 200 FR relay as their first event in the MORNING session only.

Both prelims and finals will be broken up as follows:

Every little thing about this will be in an attempt to simulate Y States.  In the morning, the last three heats of every event will be circle-seeded.  The finals session will be re-seeded based on the prelims results.  I will take everyone’s prelims SCM time and convert that time into SCY before re-seeding the finals session.  The goal will be to beat your converted times from the morning session.

It is important to note that this is not a last chance to get additional cuts.  Swimmers will be placed in their top events to best prepare them for Y States events.  If a swimmer has less than 4 Y State cuts, for example, I will still be putting them in their States events first and other events second.  Prelims events at BWT will not be official, however we will have enough timers and officials for finals to count at RVCC.

Next week I will send you guys events and heats and lanes for the AM session next week.  Our fantastic group parents will be in touch about coordinating timers and the Soissons will be taking the lead coordinating officials.  If you are a certified official, please be on the lookout for an email from Jim Temple.  All I need is a head’s up if there is some unavoidable conflict that cannot be rescheduled that prevents you from attending please let me know ASAP so we can plan accordingly.  I highly recommend as close to 100% participation as possible.
