As a YSF Barracudas parent, and as a YMCA and USA Swimming member, your volunteering role is fundamental. Without volunteers, we cannot run home meets.

As a competitive swim team, YSF Barracudas perform various home swim meets that require your assistance not only performing on deck preparations, but administrative functions as well in order to comply with YMCA and USA Swimming. One very instrumental way is by being an official by getting trained and certified. Officials are present at competitions to implement the technical rules of swimming and to ensure that the competition is fair and equitable to everyone.

Officials attend clinics, receive training and are certified by the YMCA and USA Swimming organizations. Novice officials generally start as Stroke and Turn Officials whose job it is to observe the swimmers in their assigned lanes from the time they take their first arm pull after entering the water or beginning a race, through the completion of their race. Stroke and Turn Officials ensure that the strokes, turns and finishes comply with the rules applicable to each stroke. If strokes, turns or finishes are executed in a manner which is out of compliance with the rules, in the spirit of fairness they document information to disqualify a swimmer from a race.

There are many levels of officiating that require different degrees of involvement and time. Stroke and Turn Officials learn the ropes by attending clinics, using self-study materials, and working on deck under the supervision of an experienced official.

A swimming official can be anyone over 21 years of age. Some have been, or are, swimmers themselves.  Many have never been swimmers.  What they have in common is a desire to be involved in working as a team for the betterment of the sport of swimming and a strong sense of fair play.

What do ‘Stroke and Turn Judges’ do?
The officials help the coaches and swimmers by maintaining a fair competitive environment. Stroke and Turn Judges (S/T) will observe the swimmers after the start and report any violations of the stroke and turn rules to the Referee. Officials should never incorrectly report a violation of the rules, as it is expected that all reports are based on 100% certainty that what is reported as a disqualification is a violation of the rules. The swimmers ALWAYS get the benefit of the doubt!

Officials—Levels
Swimming officials are divided into several levels, and once you have become a S/T judge, you can choose to progress to additional levels if you wish. There is no level more important than the Stroke and Turn level, but you learn additional skills at each level. The additional levels are:
• Starter
• Deck Referee
• Meet Referee
