Gator Swim Club will be competing at the Open Water Festival in Miromar Lake, Florida, April 13-15, 2018. This is a three-day, multi-event, open water competition held in a beautiful freshwater venue in Ft. Myers.

Entries will be open to swimmers in Orange, Silver, Gold, Senior, Sectional, National, and Masters groups. Swimmers who would like to compete must get permission from their Group Coach and consult with Coach Erin before signing up. For all groups except Masters, the sign-up deadline is March 30, 2018. Masters must register on their own, HERE.

If you have never participated in an open water event before, this is a great opportunity to experience a variety of different swims. For those who may be nervous about trying open water, note that we will have an “Open Water 101” information session and an “open water in the pool” practice for those who choose to compete. The weekend will be structured a little bit differently than a typical away meet, including a practice swim in the lake venue on Friday afternoon, and a team dinner on Saturday night. We will be getting special GSC Open Water Team shirts, as well.

Please read through the following information carefully. After reading through it, please contact Coach Erin (erin@gatorswimclub.com) if you have any questions. Open water swimming is the oldest kind of swimming, and is a rapidly growing part of our sport. We hope that you will choose to compete!

There are five events that comprise the Open Water Festival weekend:

  1. Crippen Cup 10
  2. Open Water Team Event
  3. Crippen Mile
  4. Florida Open Water Championships
  5. Open Water Festival Race

Crippen Cup 10K

  • Open to: Sectional and National swimmers only
  • Date: Saturday morning, April 14.
  • Cost: $60 (does not include registration for FLOW Championships nor the Open Water Team Event.)
  • Description:
    • 8 laps of a 1250 oval course.
    • In-water start, in-water finish.
    • This event is expected to draw a variety of high-level national and international open water competitors, and will be a great chance to experience high-quality open water competition.
    • This race is named for Fran Crippen, an American open water swimmer, who was a multiple medalist at various international open water and pool championships. Fran died while swimming the last race of FINA’s 2010 10K series in Fujairah, UAE. His sister, Teresa, was a USA Swimming National Team member and UF Gator Swimming and Diving Team MVP. The family maintains close ties to UF.

The Open Water Team Event

  • Open to: Orange, Silver, Gold, Senior, Sectional, and National swimmers.
  • Date: Saturday, midday, April 14.
  • Cost:
    • Swimmers must be registered (but do NOT need to participate) in Sunday’s Open Water Championships/Festival Race. The registration cost for that event is $60.
    • Masters must also pay $15 USA Swimming 1-day registration fee
    • Per person Team charge: $3.
    • Includes race cap, goodie bag, and t-shirt.
  • Description: This event is comprised of three different races: a 10 & Under Relay, and a 14 & Under, and an Open Team Pursuit.
    • 10 & Under Relay:
      • 4 swimmers on each relay (no mixed relays).
      • Each swimmer swims 200m and touch-passes off to the next swimmer. Very much like a relay in the pool, but with hand offs like a track relay.
    • What is a TEAM PURSUIT?
      • It is an open water race set up like a cycling time trial. A team of 3-5 athletes will start, swim, and finish together. Each team will set off in separate, staggered starts, typically 60 seconds apart from other teams. As in cycling, the Team Pursuit encourages swimmers to form a pack, and utilize the drafting, positioning, navigating, and pacing skills demanded of open water swimmers. The closer together and straighter the pack swims, the faster they will be. Winners are determined by the finishing time of the third swimmer in the pack. It is a unique and exciting race within the swimming world
    • 14 & Under Team Pursuit:
      • 3-5 swimmers per team. Mixed-gender teams allowed.
      • Teams swim a 1.5K course. Placement of the team is based on the time of the 3rd place swimmer on that team.
    • Open Team Pursuit:
      • 3-5 swimmers per team. Mixed-gender teams allowed.
      • Teams swim a 2.5K course. Placement of the team is based on the time of the 3rd place swimmer on that team.

The Crippen Mile

  • Open to: Orange, Silver, Gold, Senior, Sectional, National, and Masters swimmers.
  • Date: Saturday, late afternoon, April 14.
  • Cost:
    • USA Swimming swimmers: $50.
    • USMS Swimmers: $65 before April 8, $75 after April 8.
    • ALL REGISTRATIONS MUST BE COMPLETED VIA ACTIVE.COM. GSC DOES NOT PROCESS THE ENTRIES FOR THIS EVENT.  Registration link HERE.
  • Description:
    • This event is comprised of two races: a 10 & Under 500yd “Buddy Swim” and a 1-Mile Open Swim.
    • Beach start, beach finish.
  • This is a charity swim benefiting The Fran Crippen Elevation Foundation. The Fran Crippen Elevation Foundation was developed by Fran’s family and friends to continue Fran’s legacy of sportsmanship, safety, and fair play. The FCEF empowers athletes who exemplify the principles Fran embodied as they journey to elevate themselves, by providing aid for athletes as well as advocating for safe competitive environments. Gator Swim Club would like as many of our athletes as possible to swim the Crippen Mile, as a gesture of solidarity and support for the family of one of our Gators.
