The Lowcountry Splash is South Carolina's premier open water swim. The Splash began with the purpose of creating a unique open water swimming event in the Charleston area. The original goal was to have the swim go across the Charleston Harbor from Patriots Point to the Charleston Peninsula. With too many logistical nightmares, the race founders decided to make a go of the race at Trophy Lakes, a ski lake on Johns Island. After four successful years at Trophy Lakes, there was still a longing for something more challenging. The Splash moved to the Charleston Harbor in 2001.

Until 2012, the event was a 2.4 mile open water swim along the Mount Pleasant shoreline, swimming under the Cooper River Bridge and finishing at the Charleston Harbor Marina and Resorts in front of the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point. In 2002, the event was recognized as a winner of the Charleston Metro Sports Council sporting achievements. In 2013, we added a 5 mile Splash beginning at the Daniel Island Pier and proceeding across the Wando River, and then following the 2.4 course.

The Splash continues to grow in popularity attracting swimmers from 30 of 50 states and 3 countries. The 2005 Splash was cancelled race day morning due to inclement weather. Since 2005, excluding one year, the race has grown by 20-25% every year.

Proceeds from the Splash benefit the Logan Rutledge Children's Foundation, a local not for profit organization promoting the health and welfare of children in the Lowcountry. The foundation was established in May of 2002 in memory of Logan Jennings Rutledge (7/30/01-08/26/01). Over the years, the Splash has raised close to $200,000 for the Logan Rutledge Children's Foundation.  LAPS is the beneficiary of the Lowcountry Splash.

Please give to LAPS!

Lowcountry Aquatic Project Swimming (LAPS) is a local nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that provides free swimming lessons and water safety instruction to kindergarten and first grade students from Charleston County School District’s lowest socioeconomic schools. The goal of LAPS is to promote a safer community of swimmers and ultimately save lives. LAPS serves 1,400 students from 14 elementary schools each school year. The organization provides free transportation, instructional and swimming supplies, suits, towels and caps for students who would not otherwise have this exposure. Instructors are CPR, First Aid and Swim Lessons University certified and record data from students’ skill attainment after each lesson. LAPS operates within a current annual budget of $160,000 with the goal of growing and being able to reach all of the Lowcountry's elementary schools. Thank you for “getting under it” to benefit our children!

Registration is now open for the 2018 Lowcountry Splash.  This will be the 17th Annual Splash and the first year GCY will participate as a group, BUT several of our swimmers and parents have been doing it for YEARS and rave about it!

The Splash is on Memorial Day weekend which makes it an even better reason to come spend a long weekend in one of the top tourist destinations in the US.  Tell your friends and neighbors in the lane next to you to book their flights and hotel rooms and come Splash in the Charleston Harbor with 600 other race participants.
