3rd Duckling Session

Session 3 starts on 7/16 6 classes M/T/TH

Duckling Level 1 – Water Introduction – This level is designed for those students who are not swimming independently for more than 5 yards. This level will cover the basic exploration of water and water adjustment. This level is designed for beginner level swimmers who have had no prior formal swim instruction. To advance to the next level the student must be able to demonstrate the following skills:
* Blowing bubbles through mouth and nose, 3-5 seconds
* Bobbing under water, 5 times
* Front glide, 2 body lengths, with face in the water
* Recover from front glide to vertical position
* Back glide, 2 body lengths
* Back float, 5 seconds
* Recover from a back float or glide to a vertical position
* Roll from front to back
* Roll from back to front
* Treading water using arm and hand actions (in chest-deep water)
* Alternating leg action on front, assisted – 10 yards
* Alternating arm action on front, assisted – 10 yards
* Combined arm and leg actions on front, assisted – 10 yards
* Alternating leg action on back, assisted – 10 yards
* Finning action on back, assisted – 10 yards

Duckling Level 2 – Swimming Fundamentals – This level is designed for those students who have completed Duckling Level 1 or are able to demonstrate all of the skills outlined in Level 1. In Level 2 students will be learning the fundamentals of stroke development and swimming completely independent. Students will be able to make forward progression on both front and back without support. To advance to the next level the student must be able to demonstrate the following skills:
* Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side (in shoulder-deep water)
* Fully submerging and holding breath, 5 seconds
* Bobbing under water, 10 times
* Back float 15 seconds – unassisted
* Back glide, 3 body lengths
* Treading water using arm and leg action, 15 seconds
* Combined arm and leg actions on front, unassisted (rotary breathing not required) – 15 yards
* Combined arm and leg actions on back, unassisted (finning is permitted) – 15 yards

Duckling Level 3 – Stroke Development – This level is designed for those students who have completed Duckling Level 2 or are able to demonstrate all of the skills outlined in Level 2. In Level 3 students will begin to refine stroke technique and efficiencies. Students will be able to demonstrate both freestyle and backstroke. To advance to the Flying Ducks swim team the student must be able to demonstrate the following skills and be approved by the BLST head coach for placement on the team:
* Headfirst entry from the side in a sitting position (in water at least 9 feet deep)
* Rotary breathing while swimming freestyle, 10 times
* Push off in a streamlined position on front then begin flutter kicking, 3-5 body lengths
* Freestyle, 25 yards unassisted, demonstrate rotary breathing
