Team Scores Highly in Grinnell Iowa

Seventeen Dolphins traveled to Grinnell, Iowa for the 2014 Beat The Heat Long Course Meet, and they returned with several new best-times, ribbons, and Championship Qualifying swims.  The Dolphins placed ninth overall out of 22 teams.  Over 500 swimmers competed in the three-day event.

Laken Hugenberg, 13, led team with a third-place high points finish in the 13-14 girls category, scoring 199 points.  Laken placed first in the 200M Breaststroke and 400M Individual Medley events.   Laken also earned first place in Friday night’s ‘Fifties’ competition.

Lauren Frazier, 12,  brought home 146 points for the team.  She placed 2nd in the 50M Freestyle and 3rd in the 50M Butterfly.  She also swam the 1500M free and 800M free for the first time in competition, earning ‘A’ times in both.  Lauren placed 5th in the Friday Fifties.

Evan Ren, 11, earned 137 points, earning a 3rd place in the 50M Breaststroke and earned new Regional Qualifying times in the 400 IM, 400M free, and 50M fly.  Evan placed 5th in the Friday Fifites. 

Tyler and Kyle Frazier each earned 122 points during the meet.  Tyler placed 1st in the 50M free and the 200 M free, while Kyle took home 3rd in both the 50M fly and free races.  Tyler, 7, notched his first-ever ‘BB’ time in the 50M back and took 2nd in the Friday Fifties.  Kyle placed 6th in that competition.

Madison and Emilee Gorrell also earned big points for the team with 103 and 92, respectively.  Madison made two ‘B’ times (her first two!) in the 50M Back and 50M Free races.  Emilee added four events to her Regional Championship schedule:  50  free,  200 free, 100 back, and 50 fly. 

David Liu qualified in five Regional events:  50, 100, and 200 Breaststroke, 200 Backstroke, and the 400 IM.  Travis Gorrell and Ryan Huseman each earned their first ‘B’ times in the 50M free.

All six of the Dolphin mile swimmers had new personal-best times:  Hannah, Kendall, Savannah, Valerie (her first mile!),  Laken and Lauren. 

Graham Wright, Valerie Howerton and Savannah Howerton all swam events with double-digit time drops in the senior division.  Moses Calkins and Drew Tushaus also notched personal-best times in the 12U division.

Congratulations to all the swimmers on a great weekend of racing in Iowa!  The next USA Swimming competition will be held July 18-20 in Peoria IL at the Regional Championship meet.
