There were some simply jaw-dropping performances this weekend.
Our 11 qualifying swimmers showed off their stuff at the NJ YMCA 13&Over States Championships at Franklin & Marshal College in Lancaster PA, while 2 others also rocked the blocks at the NJ Swimming Senior Championships at Peddie in Hightstown, NJ.
56 individual splashes at Y States, and 4 more at Senior Champs, yielded 35 Career Best Times. Some of these were significant drops, including over 6 secs in Mitchell Bove’s 100 Breast, over 8 secs in Brooke Gardner’s 200 Back, over 9 secs in Jake Riva’s 200 IM, and over 12 secs in Sam Russell’s 200 Breast. And, not to be out-shined, our lone Medley Relay of Gardner, Russell, Soutter, and Pallis dropped 12 seconds.
Despite competing against some mammoth-sized teams with tons of talent, our Swordfish splashed into some top-spots. Our 18 trips to finals were highlighted by top-6 places by Jake Riva (3rds in 100 Back & 200 Free, 4th in 200 IM, and 5ths in 100 & 50 Free); and Sam Russell (5th in 100 Breast, and 6ths in 200 Breast & 200 IM).
3 new National times were earned by Riva (100 Back), Rothamel (200 Back) and Russell (100 Breast) as well as a few other Nat time-trial qualifying swims; bringing our total number of possible splashes at Greensboro to 19!
New team records were set Emily Rothamel (500 & 1000 Free); Jake Riva (50, 100,& 200 Free, 100 & 200 Back, 200 IM); Mitchell Bove (100 Breast); Sam Russell (100 Free, 100 & 200 Breast, 200 IM); and Brooke Gardner (200 Back) at Y States, and Tanner Kronski (200 Breast), looking good in all of his new gear, added another at Senior Champs for a total of 15 new records this weekend!
Out of 26 YMCA Teams in the State, our 4 Boys finished 15th, our 7 Girls finished 14th, and our 11 SCY swimmers finished 15th overall. For comparison, other teams in the top 15 had considerably larger numbers, like SVY who had 103 swimmers, RBY with 78, LHY had 70, and so on…
A special shout-out of appreciation to our deck-warriors, coaches Kurt, Becky, Julie, and Linda for their many hours of inspiration and guidance this weekend.
And congrats to all of our crew- we are very proud of our Swordfish.
