Piranhas Take a Bite Out
of Senior "Chomps"
Eleven Piranhas made their presence known at the
Virginia Swimming Senior Championships in Richmond July 21-24.
In total, they delivered 45 best times in 57 events (~79%)
and five out of the 11 swimmers swam 100% best times. Here
are more of the individual highlights:
Kelsey Childress put up 4 new
lifetime bests, including an impressive 8-second drop in the 400 IM
and a greater than 3% improvement in her 100 breast.
Tara Enneking made her Senior
Champs debut in excellent fashion, earning a second swim in her
very first event, the 100 breast. She also swam lifetime
bests in the 200 breast and 50 free and swam ferociously on
relays.
John Michael Gordon delivered
100% best times, the most awesome of which was probably his
heat-hammering 7-second drop in the 400 free that earned him a spot
in finals. He also improved his 400 IM by nearly 5 seconds to earn
a finals swim in that event too.
Josh Hankey achieved a milestone
goal in the 100 fly by breaking the 1:00 barrier (not once, but
twice), going 59.36 at finals. He also took down his personal
records in the 200 back, 200 fly, and 400 IM and was a reliable
relay member all weekend.
Brendan Murray was a distance and
relay ace all weekend, dropping time like it was hot. He
improved by 33 seconds, 21 seconds, 10 seconds, and 3 seconds in
the 1500-800-400-200 freestyles respectively. Brendan
achieved this with careful, confident pacing and a willingness to
go for it!
Ethan Navarro posted 4 best
times, achieving a new Futures meet cut in the 200 IM with his
late-Sunday outside smoke from lane 8 at finals, when he went
2:12.31. This excellent swim narrowly missed the team record
of 2:11.98. His 200 breaststroke swim at finals was his best time
by almost 4 seconds. Ethan will swim at the Futures meet in College
Park, Maryland August 5-7.
Austin Orange was coming off an
excellent performance at the Summer Awards meet, and still managed
to swim well, beating his previous best in the 100 breast on his
second taper.
Lexi Plogger raced to 3 new
lifetime best times, one each in freestyle, IM, and breaststroke,
having to corral her natural speed in some cases. She was a
key relay member all weekend and swam with pride for her
team.
Sutton Schonfelder had an
excellent meet, posting 100% best times. He has been Mr.
Steady all season, chipping away at his times. This meet, he
dropped 4 seconds in the 200 breast to earn a second swim,
improving by nearly 5% in that event at his season-ending
meet.
Ashley Sennett lowered the
distance BOOM on the meet, shedding time in 100% of her events.
Her 22-second drop in the 1500 and 16-second drop in the 800
were particularly impressive. She raced with the confidence
that only good preparation can bring, and it paid off for her in a
big way.
Casey Wrabley made her last LY
meet before she heads off to college a memorable one, swimming to 5
best times over the course of the weekend. Most memorable was
her 15 second drop in the 400 IM (happily earning her two swims :-)
and her 6-second improvement in the 400 free. What a way to
go out!
Great meet, Piranhas!!!
