The new UBC Aquatic Centre is officially open to the public as of Monday January 23. This $39 million state-of-the-art facility is home to a number of aquatics programs, including the decorated UBC Thunderbirds varsity swim teams, the National Training Centre for Swimming Canada in Vancouver, and the Vancouver Pacific Swim Club.
Located at 6080 Student Union Boulevard next to the Student Recreation Centre and the UBC Bus Loop, the brightly lit UBC Aquatic Centre houses three pools:
A warm leisure pool including a lazy river and adjacent hot tub
A 10-lane short-course 25m pool
A 10-lane long-course 50m pool
On January 18, a special event was hosted to commemorate the opening of this space. The first official jump into the pool as well as the first race in the facility involved a number of special guests and alumni, including our very own Alexandra Turvey and our Director of Swimming Brian Johns.
