Short Course Champs

Thanks and congratulations to all 51 of our swimmers who competed at Short Course Champs in Moscow last weekend. CAST took 4th place in the team race out of the 14 teams representing the Inland Empire. CAST took home the  Champs Spirit award for the second consecutive year-special shout-out to Tristan Whiting, who was behind the lanes cheering for his teammates all weekend long. In fact, he garnered a spirit award vote for himself! We had many great performances and I won’t be able to mention everyone, but here are a few highlights:

Our 15 and overs won their age group’s high point award for the second year in a row, bolstered by a pair of High Point winners for the 15 and over division in Jon Archer and Sarah Nicholls. Sarah was also named as co-Inland Empire Swimmer of the Year for 2016. Cole Curtis was a close second in the 15 and over division high point race, and Logan Robillard was second for the 11-12 boys. Logan’s swims were very impressive; he is closing in on some of Bryce Kananowicz’s team records we weren’t sure would ever be touched-Logan is just a few tenths from team history in the 100 free! Two swimmers made their first cuts for meets at the next level. Tristan Schmidt has made unbelievable progress-he’s only been competing with CAST since late 2015-and with an astonishing 51.0 100 free, he qualified for the Age Group Zones in the 13-14 boys division while still 13! Gabby Garasky qualified for Age Group Sectionals at the end of March in 4 different events, crushing her previous best times-she dropped 8 seconds in the 100 fly to qualify on Saturday! Great job you two!

A couple of kudos to some of our younger swimmers who stepped up-Maicie Archer qualified for her first champs in the 100 breast, and her coming allowed the 10 and under girls to have a pair of relays. Jack Pierce stepped and swam at champs and did a relay Sunday morning despite concurrently playing in a hockey tournament in Moscow in between sessions. Sam Ausband only started competing in meets last summer, but he qualified for Champs and even finished top 8 in 3 races! Ashlyn Craigie was a perfect 4 for 4 best times at the meet and anchored the girls’ relays. Jack Hooper went 6 for 9 in best times, and was top 8 in all but one of his individual events.

Micah Hudlet had a great tuneup meet before Senior Sectionals, garnering a couple best times and moving up the top times list in her events. Aren Kariotis has burst onto the scene since high school season, qualifying for 4 events at Age Group sectionals, and just missed his Senior cuts in a couple events. Alahna Lien has made tremendous progress, and finished top 8 in 5 of her events, dropping time in the morning and again at night in all her finals swims! Tristan Whiting filled out his AGS plate with 2 cuts in the 400 IM and 200 breast, and went best times in 3 other events. Micah Sharples once again swam the toughest event set and the most yards of any of our swimmers, and finished top 8 in them all.  Lanis Webb improved in 3 of his 4 events, including a brilliantly swum 100 freestyle

Although Saturday morning’s session was a rough one for many of our swimmers, the coaches were very pleased with the toughness and racing dedication the swimmers brought to finals and to Sunday’s events. Sometimes swimmers have to have short memories and move on from a poor race and refocus on the next one, and by and large our kids did a great job moving forward. Thanks to all the kids who brought their team spirit and showcased the hard work from the past season!

A final announcement: we held our annual captain’s elections, and by an overwhelming landslide, Sarah Nicholls and Tristan Whiting will be the captains for the upcoming year. They will join Micah Hudlet, who has acted in the capacity of and will henceforth officially be a captain until she goes off to school in August. The coaches are supremely confident in the ability of these talented leaders to help make all our swimmers’ experiences with CAST the best they can be!

Good luck to all our swimmers at Shamrock this weekend, Senior Sectionals next week, and Age Group Sectionals in 2 weeks!
