ROCS Swimmers Shine at Summer Championships

ROCS Swimmers Shine at Summer Championships

Over the past two weekends, ROCS swimmers have competed provincially at two meets. The first, the Summer Festival Championships, was aimed at younger swimmers, while the second, the Ontario Age Group Championships, was for competitive swimmers of all ages.

Festival Championships

ROCS sent 4 swimmers to Ontario Summer Festivals held on the June 24-25 weekend at the Markham Pan Am pool. This was the venue that hosted water polo during the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games and it is a beautiful 10-lane Olympic-sized pool. Our crew - Jacob Pawlak (Academy Red), Olivier Risk (Academy White), Luca Haines and Katie Ford (Junior Performance) - did a great job of performing in multiple events in each session.

Here are the highlights:

Jacob Pawlak - Was a first-time qualified for this provincial level competition. Jacob impressed by swimming to personal bests in all of his swims and finishing 11th and 9th respectively, in the 50m BR and 100m BR. Way to go Jacob!

Katie Ford - A repeat qualifier showed her strength in the butterfly events by posting best times in the 100m and 200m butterfly. Katie bettered her own 11-12 club record in the 200m fly and narrowly missed the 50m freestyle record (also a best time). Katie finished the weekend with a strong swim in the 200m I.M. to match her best time. Awesome job, Katie!

Olivier Risk - Another repeat qualifier had qualified for Festivals at our long-course Regional Champs in 50m freestyle individual event after posting a spectacular time in the boys 11-12 4 x 50 freestyle relay. Olivier had strong swims in both the 50m freestyle and 100m backstroke matching his personal short-course times. High fives, Olivier!

Luca Haines - In his third Festival appearance, asserted himself in the breaststroke and individual medley events. Luca finished in an impressive 4th place in the 200m breaststroke and 6th place in the 100m breaststroke. Strong swims and personal bests put Luca in the top 20 in the 400m I.M. and 400m FR. Congrats, Luca!

Congratulations to these four swimmers for their representation of ROC Swimming and their success at this meet!

Provincials

With our largest roster to date, ROCS sent 12 swimmers to the Swim Ontario AA/Provincials meet over the Canada Day weekend, June 29-July 2. Junior swimmers in attendance were: Sawyer Bosley, Luca Haines, William Risk, Jackson Waddell, and Jillian Wudrich. Senior swimmers in attendance were: Sara Andersen, Freddy Chandler-Baas, Greg Pope, Evan Stelzer, Jordan Storm, Justin Wang, and Adelle Yamashita-Ball.

Our swimmers were fortunate to have the experience to race in the world-class Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, which was the host to all of the swimming events during the Toronto Pan Am Games. This impressive facility houses two, 10-lane 50m pools as well as an 8-lane 25m dive tank. This was also the first time that our swimmers were in a state-of-the-art facility that took video analysis of starts and finishes, and this technology proved useful in disqualifying some of our swimmers.

The experience wouldn’t be complete without the three digital scoreboards, one of which live streamed video of the racing the entire weekend. It was pretty cool to see our swimmers’ names pop up on screen as they came barreling into the finish. And if that wasn’t enough, three of Canada’s Rio Olympians were racing alongside the swimmers at Provincials: Kylie Masse (Bronze - 100m BK), Kennedy Goss (Bronze - 4 x 200 FR), Javier Acevedo (100m BK).

As she was seeded in the top 24 of all times entered, Senior swimmer Jo Storm raced against Kylie in the 200m BK preliminary heats in the morning, which saw Kylie swim a world class time in the event!

Day 1 Highlights

Strong showing the 800m freestyle at Provincials and AA meet. Adelle (4th), Sara (7th) and William (9th) all placed inside the top 10 at Provincials, while Freddy (2nd) and Evan (2nd) snagged some silver hardware at the AA meet.

Greg and Luca proved themselves in the 200m BR at the AA meet finished 6th and 3rd respectively.

Jackson dropped an incredible full second off his 50m freestyle time to finish on top of the podium (1st) in the AA meet.

Jordan was the only swimmer to return at night, bettering her own personal best time as well as the 15-16 and Open category club records in the 100m BK. Jordan finished 7th in this event.

The Women’s 4 x 50 Medley Relay swam by Jordan (BK), Sara (BR), Adelle (FLY), and Sawyer (FR) slashed a full second off the sprint relay’s seed time.

Day 2 Highlights

Adelle dropped another 8 seconds off her best 1500m FR time from long-course Regionals to finish 5th in this event. Adelle is qualified for the Canadian Swimming Championships in this event, formerly known as Summer Senior Nationals.

Sawyer finished 5th in the 200m FR after an impressive prelim swim in the morning to achieve the Canadian Junior Championship standard in this event. Sawyer came back at night and dropped another 2 seconds, for a full 4 second drop off her personal best!

Jordan took on the task of swimming the 400m I.M. twice in one day after qualifying for the final in the morning. Jordan finished 7th in the final, narrowly missing her personal best time in this event.

Jackson and William both competed in the AA meet in freestyle events. Jackson finished 6th with a best time in the 100m FR while William finished 2nd in the 200m with a personal best and new 13-14 club record time.

Day 3 Highlights

ROCS was back at it in the 1500m with William, Freddy and Evan competing in this event. William dropped 10 seconds from his time to finish 5th in this event, that he will be racing again at the Canadian Junior Championships. Evan racing in his first-ever Provincial meet finished 17th in this event. Freddy representing ROCS in the AA meet, took the gold medal and finished with a new personal best.

In a highly anticipated race, Greg finished 18th in the 100m BR, narrowly missing his best time and the national standard.

To finish the session, Adelle, Jordan, Sara, and Sawyer competed with each other again in the Women’s 4 x 50 FR dropping a full 2 seconds off their seed time.

Day 4 Highlights

The final day brought lots of excitement, especially in the 400m freestyle. Sara, Sawyer,  Adelle and William narrowly missed the national standard in this event, finishing in 7th, 1st (AA), 10th and 9th respectively.

In the AA meet, Jackson and Luca had strong swims. Jackson dropped 4 seconds to finish in 3rd place, while Luca finished his provincial tour in 12th place.

Justin following his return to the meet post-high school graduation, did not disappoint by finishing 1st in the AA 200m BK and 200m I.M.. These were Justin’s final swims as an age-group swimmer and we wish him good luck at the University of Waterloo in the fall.

Jordan had a tough double competing in both the 200m I.M. and 200m BK in the final session of the meet. Jordan did a great job stepping up to the challenge and qualified for the finals in both, finishing 8th in the 200m I.M. and 5th in the 200m BK.

Coach Amanda and Coach Nico are extremely proud of their swimmers’ efforts, securing best times each day and representing ROCS with pride and tie dye!

Congratulations to the following swimmers who Broke Club Records, another impressive 20 record breaking events!
