COBRA Swim Club "Heroes" Recognized at Annual Awards Banquet

COBRA Swim Club “Heroes” Recognized at Annual Awards Banquet

Brampton’s COBRA Swim Club celebrated the amazing achievements of the club’s swimmers on October 22, 2017.

Swimmers, parents, and coaches reminisced about the 2016-2017 swim season while enjoying a delicious buffet brunch at the Millennium Gardens Banquet Centre. There were several special guests in attendance including, 1992 and 1996 Olympian and Olympic Bronze medalist and former COBRA alumnus Stephen Clarke, 200m Fly Canadian National Record Holder Zack Chetrat (Guest Speaker), 2000 Olympian, COBRA alumnus, Rob Taylor, Naomi and Brian Bacon (presenters for the Greg Bacon Memorial Award), Canadian Master Level 5 Official, Jeff Holmes, and representatives from the City of Brampton and Boys and Girls Club of Peel.

“Swimmers are Heroes.” Those were the first words that guest speaker Zack Chetrat spoke. He kept repeating those 3 powerful words throughout his time on stage. He captivated the audience with his personal swimming journey. He shared the back-story about just missing qualifying for the 2012 Olympic team in the 200 fly by 0.02 seconds.  Even though he did not reach his lifetime “goal” of representing Canada at the Olympics, he accomplished some amazing things. He recounted the moments leading up to his swim of a lifetime at the 2015 Pan Am games: Setting a new national record and winning the Bronze medal in the 200m fly. This swim hero’s key piece of advice for COBRA swimmers: Never underestimate the swimmer in lane 8… or lane 1.

Hard work and dedication to the sport of swimming was recognized through numerous awards as follows:

John Fenton award: Ian Dalbec

Distance Award: Faith MacQueen

The Greg Bacon Memorial Award is especially significant as it commemorates a young and talented COBRA swimmer. Before Coach Ulf presented the award to Barstow Nyhof, he explained that he had selected Bar to receive this award before he broke Greg’s club record in the 200 breaststroke LC event at the Canadian Junior Championships. It was an appropriate coincidence.

The Spirit Award was presented to Abbey Clarke by Coach Jorge. Abbey demonstrated the “Spirit” for qualities by volunteering her time with numerous events such as, learn to swim.  She also wrote and presented a speech at her school about the sport of swimming.
