A quick chat with Ethan Moon , SR1
1. Where do you go to school? I go to
Wesleyan School and my favorite class is English.
2. How do
you balance academics and athletics? Any tips for achieving
success in both?
I'm happy that I swim because it has definitely taught
me how to manage my time. When I'm struggling to do both swimming
and school, I just think of Coach Beth telling me, "find a way to
get it done," and just do it. Pro tip: don't procrastinate your
work (and if you're a senior, don't wait to do college apps until
the day before the deadline).
3. What colleges are you looking at?
Do you know what you want to major in or have as a
I'm not sure what I want to do but I'm
looking at UGA, GT, UNC, UVA, Dartmouth, Duke, and
4. How do
you prepare for busy times of the academic year (finals, statewide
testing, etc.) in regards to swimming?
I don't think it's healthy to force yourself to sit in
my room and study/rest. It makes me lazy. On the other hand,
exercise keeps the body alert, so I'm always at practice during
exams, standardized testing, etc.
5. Is there a particular coach that
especially motivates you or something specific that any of your
coaches has said or does to motivate you?Coach Sam was my first senior-group
coach and I wouldn't still be swimming if it weren't for him. He
taught me above all else, swimming is about having fun.
6. How do
you prepare for meets?
I have a routine; here it is: The day before, I drink
lots of water. When I wake up the morning of the meet, I have 3
shots of espresso, and some peanut butter pretzels. I consume one
muffin throughout prelims. In between sessions, I take a power nap
after reading the first chapter of Legacy by James Kerr
(thanks Coach Beth). Before finals, some gatorade and stretching.
After finals, pasta. <3
7. Do you
have any specific swimming goals in the next 12 months?
I want to
swim in college so it would be cool if I could walk-on wherever I
choose to go.
8. What do
you wish you realized about swimming when you were 12 years
When I was 12 I still did other sports.
I wish I realized that I should swim full-time when I was younger
because I didn't start taking swimming seriously until I was 14
years old (freshman year).
