2017 Winter Juniors in Iowa City
Every year since 2015, the Tualatin Hills Swim Club has decided to participate in USA Swimming’s Junior Championship Meet instead of hosting it’s own International Meet. This experience allows our swimmers to get a chance to race some of the best swimmers in the country in a short course yards format that tests not only their fitness but also their racing preparedness and strategy.
The 2017 THSC Junior Team consisted of:
Elizabeth Cook, Angie Lindsay, Tia Lindsay, Fay Marie Lustria, Jessica Maeda, Sofia Nosack, Ethan Luc, Trent Martinez, Marco Nosack, and Uriel Tejeda. That meant that not only would swimmers be representing THSC in individual swims but relays as well.
This year’s meet was held at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. The pool was beautiful but as is the case with most indoor facilities, the air quality quickly degrades over the course of the week due to so many swimmers.
Wednesday, December 6
The action started Wednesday night with the 200 Medley Relays. The THSC women placed 34 while the men placed 49.
This was immediately followed by this coach’s FAVORITE relay at a meet like this, the 800 freestyle relay. Trent Martinez led off the boys relay in a near best time and a brilliantly executed race (1:39.22) while the relay as a whole placed 31. The ladies put up some very tough swims as well placing 30.
Thursday, December 7
The first full day of competition started off with 500 freestyle. The Thunderbolts had Tia Lindsay (5:02.53), Sofia Nosack (5:03.09) and Trent Martinez (4:32.44) swimming in the morning but missing the cut for another swim at night and Angie Lindsay (5:08.61) swimming as a time trial just off her best time.
This was followed by the 200 IM where Marco Nosack went a best time of 1:56.61 and Jessica Maeda and Fay Marie Lustria just missed personal bests as well.
The day closed out with the 50 freestyle which didn’t quite go as planned for THSC but since USA Swimming was providing video replays and analysis of all the swims that week, valuable information was learned from each swim so that we won’t be making the same mistakes twice (as there’s not really much room for error in an event as short as the 50 free!)
Friday, December 8
Saturday morning was another fun day at the pool! Despite worsening air quality, the Thunderbolts manages some fantastic swims. In the women’s 200 freestyle, Sofia Nosack and Tia Lindsay both swam extremely smart races. Both of them showed a great deal of maturity and excellent race strategy swimming just off their best times. On the guys side Trent Martinez swam another great 200 free to place 24 meaning he’d have another swim at night in finals, the first of the meet for THSC! In finals he moved up even more placing second in the C final!
Other notable swims from the day were Jessica Maeda who went about a second off her best in the 100 breast (1:04.80) and her fastest of the season and Marco Nosack who did go a best time of 58.53! Fay Lustria also demonstrated to the rest of her heat just how to do some of the best under waters of the meet!
That night, the THSC 200 Freestyle relays of Lizzy Cook, Tia Lindsay, Angie Lindsay, and Sofia Nosack placed 38, while the men’s relay of Ethan Luc, Trent Martinez, Marco Nosack, and Uriel Tejeda just missed scoring in 25 place! Way to go Thunderbolts!
Saturday, December 9
The last day of the meet started out with the 200 backstroke. THSC didn’t have any swimmers in the men’s race but both Sofia Nosack and Tia Lindsay swam in the women’s competition to get things rolling.
Marco Nosack swam another fantastic race in the 200yd Breaststroke with at 2:05.82. Jessica Maeda also swam a strong 200 br on the women’s side.
In the 200yd Butterfly, Fay Lustria started out VERY strong but just ran out of gas the last two 50’s. It was a great learning experience though as it was her first Junior Championship. That evening in the 400 Freestyle Relay, Trent Martinez lead off the men with a best time (46.2) and was backed up by strong swims from the rest of the team; Ethan Luc (46.1), Marco Nosack (47.5), and Uriel Tejeda (46.9). The women placed 34th with some strong swims as well; Lizzy Cook (51.0), Tia Lindsay (51.7), Angie Lindsay (53.4), and Sofia Nosack (52.0).
And with that, the 2017 Winter Juniors Meet came to a close.  It was a valuable meet to check our level of fitness and to gain experience competing against the best that the western part of the united states has to offer. THSC left the meet motivated for the rest of the season and even more excited to return in 2018 and put some points on the scoreboard!
