December 19, 2017
Christmas is almost here and let me be the first to wish all WTSC members a Merry Christmas. Also, thank you for your continued support of WTSC. This time of year, we all reflect on what we are grateful for and the WTSC coaches and Board of Directors are grateful for your support and dedication. We hope you enjoy the holidays and spend it with family and friends and of course, spend ample time at the pool! Swimmers thrive during the holidays and this brief, rare time where kids can “just swim” and not worry about school can propel them towards big goals at the end of the season. We look forward to seeing you at the pool and please note the news below.
JAGS Invite Recap
Following up an outstanding showing at Holiday Champs, WTSC stayed hot at the JAGS Winter Invitational. An updated Honor Roll is posted at the pool and on the club website for the JAGS Invite and Snowball Intrasquad (see below), but more than 60 swimmers competed at IUPUI and helped WTSC finish third overall in the team standings against more than 900 swimmers from around the Midwest. As always, there are numerous individual highlights but special congratulations go the following WTSC swimmers who took home first place finishes on the weekend: Avery Aiello (50 Back), Lurilla Bereveskos (500 Free), Brody Friend (50 Free) and Colin Parker (50, 100 & 200 Free; 100 Fly). Several swimmers added to their Honor Roll resume, led by Ayden Fahey who made a new Age Group State cut in the 50 Free and Colin Parker, who made new AG State cuts in the 50 & 100 Back. And adding to the WTSC distance swimming resume were Keira White and Lily Wolfe, who both made new Divisional cuts in the 500 Free. Congratulations to our swimmers who competed at the JAGS meet and as you will see below, the fast swimming for WTSC wasn’t confined to the IUPUI Natatorium!
Hot on the heels of the JAGS Invite was the final competition for WTSC in 2017, the Snowball Intrasquad. Our swimmers made the most of this last chance to race before the new year! First and foremost, the Snowball Intrasquad served as the final practice – and introduction to competition – of the current session of Riptides. Congratulations on your swims and your first meet to the following Riptide swimmers: Julia Ball, Abigail Buening, Patrick Burke, Amyja Jones, Leah Kiefer, Thomas Lapp, Margaret Lutes, Quinn Miller, Esteban Roussel, Bryson Seal, Ainsley Taylor, Mirabelle Ullom and Joey Whelan. The highlights didn’t stop there as a variety of swimmers punched tickets to championship meets, always a special occasion in the career of a swimmer and especially in the case of a “first time ever” swim. Fitting the bill, David Buening made the first Age Group State cut of his career in the 100 Breast, Avery Aiello made the first Divisional cut of her career in the 50 Free, and Sho Shirayanagi made the first Divisional cuts of his career in the 50 Free and 50 Breast. Maggie Miller (50 Free) added her name to the Honor Roll for the first time this season, and Sam Houchens (400 IM), Allison Smith (200 IM) and Justin White (50 Breast) all picked up new Divisional cuts for the season. Way to go WTSC swimmers and congratulations to all on a great 2017 of racing!
Christmas Break Schedule
The WTSC practice calendar is posted on the website. The current December document takes the club through the first two weeks of January and includes all NC meets and holidays. For now, the weather forecast remains clear but as always, that can change. Practice changes will be communicated to you directly by the coaches but other than unexpected cancelations, please follow the schedule closely. Also, double check for changes and / or additions to your swimmer(s) schedule over the holiday break. As always, please contact your group coach if you have questions.
WTSC Groundhog Invite
It’s never too early to look ahead, so please take note of the second major hosted event for WTSC this season, the Groundhog Invite (January 26-28 @ NCHS). As with all hosted meets, all WTSC swimmers will be pre-entered and you will have until the deadline (January 9) to “opt out” your swimmers from participation. Meet worker signups and information will be available closer to the event but mark your calendars now and get ready to host another great WTSC meet.
Thanks again for your support. Go WTSC and Merry Christmas!
