THSC Represents at the 2018 Washington Open!
January 17, 2018
The Washington Open Meet is known for two things; 12 hour days where prelims runs directly into finals, and fast swimming. The 2018 edition of the meet delivered both in spades!
The first full day of competition for THSC was Friday. Caspar Corbeau became the Thunderbolt’s first finals qualifier in the 200IM going a best time in prelims (1:51.64). This event was followed up by the 200 backstroke where Maria Sanger had a strong swim just off her personal best to top the THSC women for that event. Natalie Kayfes went a best time (and would do so later in the day qualifying for finals in the 500 free with a best time of (5:06), as did Neeraj Javadekar and Davis Bruton.
Rachel Chin had a FANTASTIC individual meet and it started out with a 25.1 relay split followed up by a 25.37 individual swim in the 50 freestyle. Rachel also swam wonderful in her other events for the meet; the 100Fr, 200Fr, and 100Br. Caspar also qualified to swim in his second finals for the meet swimming 20.94 in the morning.
The 500 Free was the last event of the morning and it did not disappoint. While THSC had some fantastic swims, Natalie Kayfes had a very strong swim mentioned earlier and Neeraj Javadekar continued to have the breakout meet of his life JUST MISSING the 5:00 barrier by swimming 5:0.26!
The action on Saturday saw a slightly larger THSC squad and an even more crowded pool. In the 100 butterfly, Marco Nosack had a HUGE time drop swimming almost a full 3 seconds faster than his best going 54.11. His sister Sofia also had an awesome swim breaking the 1:00 barrier for the first time in the event. Just missing the barrier was Angie Lindsay who still had a 2 second best time and a great swim as well!
The 200 freestyles are typically a strong event for THSC and this past weekend was no exception. Swimming strong to make finals were Tia Lindsay, Angie Lindsay, Sofia Nosack, Lizzy Cook and Trent Martinez.
Closing out the lineup for the day was the 100 breaststroke where Linden Cho got closer to breaking a minute with his 1:02 while Caspar Corbeau took another step towards swimming :54 in the same event. Suyon Choi also had a stellar swim going a big best time! On the ladies side, Rachel Chin had a great swim as did Natalie Kayfes. Next and last was the 400 IM. Tia Lindsay swam a VERY strong race going a best time and qualifying for finals with a 4:28.03. Marco Nosack and Trent Martinez also had quite a dual both going best times and qualifying for finals. After the first 200 Trent had a slight lead only to loose it to Marco in the breaststroke, then Trent came motoring back in the freestyle leg like a true distance freestyler to just nip him at the finish. Great job both of you!
That last day of the meet (which by this time felt like a week long event!) closed out with some AMAZING swims! Neeraj Javadekar closed out the meet with 100% best times and those who swam finals on the last day swam some tough races. Tia Lindsay went a best time in the 100 Backstroke (56.84), Angie Lindsay went a best time in the 100 Free (52.79), Sofia Nosack won a swim off and then had an even faster finals swim, Lizzy Cook just missed a best time in the 100 free and swam a very strong 200 fly despite being a bit under the weather.
Overall, it was a great meet and EVERY swimmer who represented THSC should be extremely proud of themselves and each other!
