Fast Start for the Rapids at Senior Open

This weekend, the Richmond Rapids are competing at the 2018 Swim BC Senior Open hosted by VPSC at the new UBC Aquatic Center. The final championship meet of the provincial circuit, Senior Open is a three-day heats and finals meet. The squad composed of Ethan Chan, Matthew Crawford, Nicolaas Dekker, Lily Douglas, James Kwaksistala, Janine Low, Morgan Mark, Amanda McCallum, Matthew Meuleman, Samuel Pei, Artur Yushko and head coach Rob Pettifer are off to a great start with new club records, finals swims, and personal bests.

Friday began with the distance events and two club records. Samuel Pei finished 4th in the 800 with a new club record, just two seconds shy of the Canadian Trials cut. Amanda McCallum, 6th overall, broke the old 800 club record by 25 seconds, and got under the Canadian Swimming Championships cut in the event. The distance events were closed off by James Kwaksistala who finished 1st in the male category for the Para 400m freestyle.

In the sprint events, Rapids swimmers set multiple best times and qualified for finals. Janine Low and Matthew Meuleman qualified for Westerns in both the 50m butterfly and the 50m backstroke, landing a B final in both events. Morgan Mark and Nicolaas Dekker qualified for the A final for the 50m butterfly.  Dekker will also compete in the A final in the 50m backstroke, joined by Matthew Crawford.  The sprint finals will be held in the afternoon sessions of Saturday and Sunday.
