ROCS Turns Heads at Provincial and AA Championships

To kick off the month of March members of ROCS' Performance and Competitive Development squads competed at two meets in the greater Toronto area. The first weekend of the month had Freddy, Will, Sawyer, and Luca competing at the Ontario Spring Provincial Championships in Etobicoke, while the following weekend featured Elsa, Greg, Merin, Jackson, Evan, Elaina, Hanna, and Katie at the Spring Ontario AA Championships in Markham.

To accommodate the fact that Swim Ontario has doubled in size in the past decade to over 20,000 registered swimmers, the organization has introduced a two-tiered provincial youth championships, with the AA meet having slower qualifying standards. The depth of youth swimming in Ontario is so great that swimmers have to go from a regional level to near national level times to qualify for provincials, so an additional level was added last year with the creation of the AA-level meet.

In Etobicoke, ROCS had some stand-out results from among the nearly 950 swimmers who attended. William Risk defended his provincial 1500m freestyle title with an impressive performance; in breaking the 17:00 barrier he placed himself in the top 50 open rankings nationally. Will also picked up two bronze medals with third place finishes in the 800m and 400m free races. Not to be out-done his Senior team-mate Sawyer came away from the meet with four medals. Most impressively Sawyer came back on Sunday evening at finals to finish first in the 400m freestyle from lane 1. This added a gold to the three silver medals she had collected in the 100m, 200m, and 1500m free events. Sawyer finished in the top eight and therefore scored points in 7 of her 8 events and has two swims ranked in the open top 50. A fantastic effort by all involved as every swimmer made best times and moved up the results relative to their seed going in.

At the AA championships our swimmers experienced an enormous amount of success: every swimmer made a final and/or moved up in the rankings in all but three events. Five swimmers captured medals: Evan Stelzer won gold (1500m free), silver (400m free), and bronze (800m free), Greg Pope won two bronze (100m breast, 200m IM), Elsa Wiebe won bronze (200m fly), Jackson Waddell won two gold (50m, 100m free), a silver (400m free) and a bronze (200m free), and Merin Boyd won a staggering three gold (400m, 800m, 1500m free) and one bronze (100m free), on her way to being the 13 and under female high point winner of the meet. These swimmers all qualified for the higher level provincial championship in at least one event, as can be seen by the list of qualifying times in the tables below. As coach Amanda put it “Every single swimmer levelled up in someway. There is no better feeling than watching your swimmers reap the rewards of their hard work. I am so proud of all of them!”

The performance of ROCS at the two competitions did not go unnoticed, and several times parents and coaches from competing teams offered their congratulations on our results. Perhaps the best indicator of our success were the combined team scores, where yet again we finished well above our ranking in terms of number of swimmers attending the competition. This is because of all the hard work that the swimmers have put in to position themselves to have this level of success. “With one exception, where a swimmer added 0.3 to their 100m time, every single ROCS swimmer swam a best time in every single event at the two championship meets,” coach Nico said with a grin, “that is what you call nailing a taper.”
