Alberta Spring Champs

NEWS: The Mantas were competing in Edmonton at Swim Alberta’s Spring Championships this past weekend. It was a quality team effort with some stellar individual swims by the 7 qualifiers aged 11-14 years old.

The big highlight of the swim meet was Drew Germain (13) winning the 800m Freestyle with a 28 second time improvement to become Provincial Champion with a 9:59.08. He was prepared to “embrace the pain” as discussed with Coach Mark before his last race of the weekend!  😛 He made finals (Top 10) in his 200m Free, 400m Free, 1500m Free & 400m IM. A fantastic display of hard work beginning to pay off for the swimmer whose big season goal was to simply qualify for the competition! Congrats Drew, well done!

Maya Slee had a weekend action packed full of fast swimming. She had a big 100/200m Fly 100/200m Back 200/400m IM schedule and finished 4th in both 200m BK & 400m IM with big best times of 2:41.1 & 5:48.36 respectively. She went 1:17.85 100m fly (in her 400IM !?!???) & 2:59.58 200m Fly best times this weekend. This young Manta is slowly but surely coming to terms with the fact that swimming butterfly juuuuuust may be her thing moving forward. 😉 Happy 12th Birthday Maya!

Anika Ewashko was busy this weekend making about 5 swim suit changes throughout the weekend and making finals in 4 of her 5 races as well. She finished 10th in the 200 FR, 9th in the 50 FR & 100 FR and 7th in the 50 FL. She swam best times in her 200m Free, 100m Free & 50m Fly to go along with those top 10 finishes. Awesome (and stylish!) racing Anika!

Hunter Helberg had 6 races this weekend. He won 2 bronze medals in his timed final Para events. He took off loads of time in all his events highlighted by a 10sec PB in his 100m FLY & a 15sec PB in his 400m FR. In the 2 Mixed Para events, 50FR & 100FR, he raced heats and finals swimming PB’s in both final appearances and finishing 9th and 8th respectively. Fantastic racing Hunter.

Naomi Slee was busy swimming in finals in her 400IM, 100BK, 400FR, 200BK & 800FR. She was able to elevate her performance from heats to finals in all her races. She saved the most exciting race for last in her 800FR where she had a great race with the girl in the lane next to her. The two swimmers finished only 0.01 apart from each other in a 9min race! She ended up with a 4th place finish and was just off her PB. Great effort Naomi!

Alex Karamujic had a tough schedule this weekend with her 400 & 1500m FR and 100 & 200m FL. She came in red hot with a big 20sec PB in her 1500m finishing in 7th and had a great effort in her 200m FLY finishing in 8th place. Well done Alex!

Salima Thibault has been battling some frustrating injuries as of late but wanted to support her teammates and swim her favorite event…the 200m FLY! That event is challenging enough when you aren’t injured, she finished the race putting her grit & determination on full display good enough for 10th place.

This meet was a great display of a team effort. Points were being scored by all members of FMSC and it was a big improvement from last seasons 41 points to this seasons 86 points. GO MANTAS GO!

Big shout out to former Manta Diego Paz in qualifying for Canadian Junior Champs this past weekend!
