Far Westerns Info -- Part 2

I hope everyone had a great weekend! I am getting excited for Far Westerns. The swimmers are looking very good in the water, and I feel we are in a good position for some outstanding swims! A few more updates for the meet…

- The forecast is calling for rain on Friday and Saturday. As I tell the swimmers, we can’t control the un-controllables. So there is no sense in stressing about the weather, rather we should focus on doing whatever we can to prepare for the elements. This means bringing extra clothes, towels, blankets, shoes, etc.

Fast swimming can still happen in the rain! JOs last month is a perfect example. The RENO swimmers did an outstanding job despite rough conditions. It is all about having a positive mindset and rolling with the punches. It does look like Thursday and Sunday should be rain-free.

As parents, please do your best with keeping a positive attitude for your child. If they start to complain about the rain, just remind them that all their competitors are dealing with the same conditions and fast swimming is 100% possible in the rain.

- We will have team tents and there is a large overhang above the grandstand. This facility is one of the better outdoor facilities for rain.

- We will plan to have a team dinner on Friday evening. It will take place at Armadillo Willy’s which is just .2 miles from the pool (2624 Homestead Road). Thank you to Debbie DeRuse for helping organize the dinner. If you could let Debbie or myself know how many people from your family will be attending, we would greatly appreciate it. The time will be determined based on finals on Friday evening.

- The psych sheet has been posted. The meet appears to be a little faster than last year. My goal is get as many RENO swimmers back into finals as possible. They will be bringing one heat of 10 swimmers back in each event and age group for the 500 and shorter events (1000 and 1650 will be timed finals). They will break up the 15-18 category into 15-16 and 17-18 for finals.

- The meet is trials and finals all four days. Warm-ups for prelims will start at 7:30 AM and the meet will start at 9:00 AM. I suggest everyone does the general warm-up on Thursday morning or on the first day your child is competing. This will help your child become familiar with the competition pool. As the meet progresses, we can adjust warm-up times based on the events of the day and when your child is swimming.

- If you are not coming down to Carson City for practice on Wednesday or you aren’t leaving for Santa Clara until later in the week, I do suggest your swimmer gets in the water every day until the meet. I can give your child a practice to do on their own. Evelyn Mount (Northeast) Community Center has lap swim available during the following days/times:
  •  Monday - Friday:
    • 7:15 am - 8:45 am
    • 11:15 am - 12:45 pm
  •  Tuesday and Thursday
    • 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
  •  Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
    •  2:00 pm - 3:00 pm.
If you have any other questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you!
