While some team members and families traveled to Panama City Beach for the weekend, a handful of other swimmers stayed a little closer to home to compete in the PNY Armed Forces Day Pentathlon swim meet in Gulf Shores, AL May 19.
The one-day meet featured events in all four strokes and the individual medley, in which most all the swimmers competed.
Leading the way for GPAC was Alex Birthright, 12, who posted best times in all five of the events and captured the win in the 100-yd IM and 50-yd breaststroke. He also set three new ‘B’ times (100 IM, 50 fly, 50 fr).
Piper Nissley, 8, won three of her individual events, taking top honors in the 25-yd backstroke, 25-yd freestyle and 25-yd butterfly.
GPAC also had several swimmers post all best times at the meet. Trinity Aaker, 12, in her first-ever GPAC meet, swam the full pentathlon and set all new best times. Reef Birthright, 8, swam three events at the meet successfully and set all new best times.
Owen Mayer, 12, dropped over 20 seconds off his best time in the 100-yd IM and over 10 seconds in his 50-yd butterfly along with another 10 seconds combined from his other three events to drop the most time of any GPAC swimmer at the meet. Owen also set one new ‘BB’ time (50 fr) and one new ‘B’ time (50 back).
All in all, 13 of the 15 swimmers at the meet swam at least one personal best time in their events, and everyone had a great day of racing.
