Big Wave Decathlon Review
By Coach Summir
Last weekend at Mt. Hood our swimmers raced many events over 2 long days at the Big Wave Decathlon. We had a team bleacher section behind the coaches tables and our swimmers had fun between events. Big thanks to the Perez family for bringing a canopy to cover the bleachers on Sunday. With the sunny weather, it was much needed.
Walter Monk ran the Decathlon as the meet ref during the whole weekend! Scott Brennan, Desi Kurtz, and Jerry Perez who each helped out on Saturday or Sunday. These are the parents to thank for our entries getting into this meet. Every meet needs a large group of officials to make the swimmer’s events count towards legal times and our entries are accepted based on the number of officials we can bring to each meet. FGSC is looking for more parents to join our group of officials. We need your help. If you spent time behind the blocks timing, please email me and let me know how many service hours you should be credited.
Each meet swimmers are to wear the black suit and club cap uniform for racing as well as representing our club with the clothes they wear. Saturday was a bit chilly and some of our swimmers layered up in Dragon gear. Cali packed loads of Dragon apparel with her FGSC warm-ups, hoodie, and t-shirt! Most swimmers had their club t-shirts, some swimmers had club hoodies and parkas but all swimmers should come to meets with FGSC clothing.
Have you checked out the Top 10 times on our website? On the top bar of options, click “Athletes” and it will drop down with all age groups with both short course and long course distances. On Sunday Trask was chasing down Coach Tabor’s 8 & Under time in the 100 free. Trask’s best time going into this meet was a 1:45.45. Coach Tabor is the 4th fastest 8&U boy in the 100 with a time of 1:31.11 from 1988. Trask raced his heart out and went 1:34.08 dropping 11 seconds. The Top 10 times list is another great avenue for our competitive athletes to chase down these old records/top times.
Three Dragons finished in the top 8 in their age group and received a Decathlon towel. In the 9-10 year old girls age group Leah finished 3rd and in the 15&U girls age group Cali finished 2nd and Jordan finished 6th.
