This week at Lane Swim Team:
WELCOME TO THE 2018 SEASON AND THANK YOU:
Thank you for registering your children to swim for the Lane Swim team this season. Swimming is a sport that can accommodate a lot of participants at all different skill levels. Swimming is also very social. There will be lots of opportunities to meet new people and strengthen existing friendships over the next 7 weeks as we come together at practices, meets, and other events.
SWIM MEET SIGN-UPS ARE OPEN ONLINE:
All regular season swim meets are now open for you to “declare” your swimmers. This is the only way to let the coaching staff know which meets your swimmers will be attending and which ones they cannot. You should make a declaration for all 7 meets now. You will be able to make changes to your declarations up to 3 days before a meet. Parents who have experience with the meet sign up system are encouraged to help others who are less familiar with it.
VOLUNTEER JOBS AT SWIM MEETS:
All volunteer positions for all 7 meets are also now available to sign up for online. Each volunteer position is important, and no swim meet can run without each position filled. These jobs are your chance to showcase your talents and bond with other parents on the team by working together to make it fun for the kids (and get the meets done as quickly and efficiently as possible). Encourage your friends to sign up and work a position with you.
STROKE AND TURN OFFICIAL TRAINING PROVIDED BY THE NBSL:
For anyone interested, the Stroke & Turn Officials Training is on Tuesday June 12 at 7:00-8:00pm at the JCC at 101 Garden of Eden Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. Video training is also available on the USA Swimming website at https://www.usaswimming.org/officials/officials-training-videos.
A FEW THOUGHTS AS THE NEW SWIM TEAM MANAGER:
This is my first season volunteering as swim team manager. I’m taking over from the previous team manager Kelly Offutt, who did an outstanding job. I’m both excited and nervous about the new role. Summer swimming is unique in so many ways and my goal is to help you and your kids feel like you are what makes it so special. I swam on a summer swim team from age 6 through age 18 in the Suburban Swim League (Newark, DE). I also swam with various year-round USA Swimming and YMCA teams during that time and in high school and college. I coached at Darley and Crestview in the NBSL (1998, 2000) and at the Brandywine YMCA (1999-2002). I have been a swim parent for the last 7 years (Del Vets, Lane).
I have seen the strong bonds that summer swim team can build. For example: through swimming, my parents met their closest group of friends (they were all meet volunteers for many years at the same club), I met my best friend and many other close friends and I met my wife.
I hope that in my role I can encourage you to create a positive experience for each other this season – the kind of experiences that form strong bonds and ones that you and your kids will smile about when you reminisce in the years to come.
