8 CAST swimmers traveled to Moscow this past weekend to compete in the Vandal Sectional Qualifier. This was the first meet with 3 or more teams in attendance in our area in almost exactly one year; it was wonderful to be back in competition mode! The meet had unique stipulations due to COVID protocols, and our swimmers rolled with the restrictions and did a great job in and out of the water.
Gabby Garasky set team records in the 13-14 girl's 50 free and 100 back, and qualified for the prestigious Futures meet this summer in her 50 free. She also went a personal best in the 200 free. Elishka Janout had a jaw dropping meet, with 4 huge drops in her 4 events, including 16 seconds in her 200 breast, 11 in her 200 IM, 8 in the 100 breast, and nearly 3 in her 50 free. Camryn Schmidt was a perfect 6 for 6 on best times, and made her first ever top performer list entry for CAST with a spectacular 200 fly. Both girls made their first Senior Zone cuts, a high level meet in California in August.
Pema Anain was 3 for 3 on best times, and moved up the performer list in the 1000 free and 1650 free; Pema put in a ton of yards in just a few races and battled hard all weekend. Demi Blaylock also had 100% drops, with 4 best times capped off with a brilliant 3 second drop in her 100 fly in her last race. Kathryn Gyde had 3 best times, with a first place finish and 1 second time drop in the 100 breast and got under 25 seconds for the first time in the 50 free, qualifying for the upcoming Senior Sectional meet in that race. Trista Slife dropped over a second and a half in her 100 breast and dropped in her 50 free as well, qualifying her for senior zones this summer in both those races. Lanis Webb dropped in 2 of his 4 races, including a long-awaited 10 seconds off his 100 breast time.
Now we are on to our home meet this weekend, with what will be a welcome return to competition for all our squads!
