Great swims/dives and team depth help Minnetonka 5th consecutive Section 2AA championship

The Skippers traveled to Chaska to compete in the Section 2AA championship, with diving taking place Thursday, March 11 and swimming on Friday, March 12. The Skippers won three events, and nine athletes will compete in 14 individual events at the state championship. Additionally, the Skippers will swim all three relays at state.

In the opening 200-yard Medley Relay, Ryan McGuirk, Knute Wargin, Carson Witte and Ben Keller swam a state-qualifying time of 1:35.30 for second place. Four of Section 2’s eight teams qualified for the state meet.

Skippers placed swimmers in 9th, 10th, 16th and 19th places in the 200 Yard Freestyle. Jacob Guggisberg was first to the wall for Minnetonka, swimming 1:47.17 for ninth place, followed by Ryan Diede in tenth place with a time of 1:47.88. Leo Rosenhagen captured the last point in sixteenth place with a time of 1:40.79, and Max Louie finished nineteenth swimming 1:53.33. Section 2AA is sending five swimmers to state.

Ben Binder won the 200 Yard IM swimming a state-qualifying time of 1:52.36. McGuirk’s time of 1:56.19 also qualified for state, while earning third place. Henry Rosenhagen placed seventh swimming 1:59.21, while Gus Johanson tied for thirteenth swimming 2:02.54.  Five swimmers from the section will go to the state meet.

In the 50 Yard Freestyle, Xander Hawks placed seventh swimming 22.33. Andres Mallea, Jayanth Kurup, and Graham Muench were tenth through twelfth, swimming 22.56, 22.67, and 22.73 respectively. Three Section 2AA swimmers qualified to swim at state.

The top four divers in sections qualify for the state meet. Oliver Poitevent placed first with 431.20 points. Andrew Bussmann also qualified for state in fourth place, with 354.05 points. Trey Maroney placed fifth with 325.75 points, and Chase Garcia finished in eleventh place with 230.70 points.

In the 100 Yard Butterfly, three swimmers from Minnetonka make up the section’s ten state qualifiers. Witte and Binder placed second and third, swimming 50.97 and 51.25. Henry Rosenhagen’s state-qualifying time of 51.77 earned seven place. William Poey placed eleventh with a time of 52.31.  

Keller qualified for the state meet in the 100 Yard Freestyle, swimming 47.67 for third place. Hawks placed seventh swimming 49.941. Diede placed tenth swimming 49.28, just ahead of Mallea’s eleventh place finish in 49.43. Five swimmers in total qualified for the state meet.

Wargin won the 500 Yard Freestyle with a state-qualifying time of 4:43.49, and was only one of two qualifiers. Leo Rosenhagen placed tenth swimming 4:57.28, with Guggisberg twelfth swimming 5:01.31 and Louie fourteenth with a time of 5:09.46.

In the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, Binder, Carson Witte, Mallea and Hawks swam a state-qualifying time of 1:27.80 for third place. Four relay teams qualified for State.

Minnetonka swimmers make up two of the four state qualifiers in the 100 Yard Backstroke. Keller placed second swimming 52.64, while McGuirk’s qualifying time of 53.33 earned fourth place. Evan Witte medaled in eighth place swimming 55.60, followed by Luke Edwards swimming 55.66 for ninth place.

Minnetonka will send three swimmers to state in the 100 Yard Breaststroke as Carson Witte, Wargin, and Cole Mizutani all swam state qualifying times. Carson Witte placed second swimming 56.80, Wargin third swimming 58.47, and Mizutani fourth in 59.19. The Skippers make up three of the four state-qualifying swimmers.

Binder, Diede, Keller and McGuirk finished the meet by swimming a state-qualifying time of 3:14.86 for third place in the 400 Freestyle relay. Five of the eight section teams qualified relays for the state meet.


The state meet will take place at the University of Minnesota natatorium next week. Divers will compete on Thursday, while AA swimmers compete in two pods on Friday and A swimmers compete in two pods on Saturday.
