The BMA Bozeman Brookies were awarded $2500 through the Montana Swimming spring Reach Out grant program. The Brookies will use the funds to provide partial scholarships to minority and low-income youth to participate in swimming. The scholarships may be used to offset a portion of swimmer registration fees, monthly dues, and meet entry fees. The club will also host a diversity learn to swim splash camp to teach non-swimmer minority youth swim technique and water safety.
The club has hosted several learn to swim splash camps in the community reaching out to LatinX youth. Their coaches have also volunteered to teach LatinX parents how to swim. During the COVID-19 pandemic the club has checked in with families served by the splash camps offering emotional support and providing hand sewn face masks.
The funds from the Reach Out grant have provided opportunities for numerous youths to learn to swim and then participate in competitive swimming through the Brookies and Montana Swimming.
The Reach Out grant awards up to $2500 per season in the fall and spring to Montana Swimming clubs to provide opportunities for low income, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ, or disability swimmers within the community. The purpose of the grant program is to increase multicultural, socioeconomic, and ethnic diversity as well as encourage those who are disabled to participate in all levels of the sport of competitive swimming.
