We are proud to announce that Kate Aubrecht will be our new Team Captain for the 2021/22 season. Kate has been our Athlete Rep for Zone 2, collaborated closely with Noah Kwong during his tenure as captain on a great many projects, introduced the mentorship program and overall has been an inspiration and fantastic leader to many of us.
Here is her application essay:
“I have been a part of the Piedmont Swim Team since I was nine years old. The group Piranha 0 (lower than the lowest group Piranha 1 at the time) was created for kids like me- brand new to the sport and still learning the strokes. Nearly nine years later, I am still on PST and swimming with the highest group! It’s hard to properly encapsulate what this team means to me; I have cried more and laughed more and experienced more of everything through PST. As cliche as it is, this team is truly my home-away-from-home. I’ve made so many memories with my teammates: cheering in rain and heat, attending travel meets and camps, eating countless teriyaki bowls, commiserating over a hard set - and I want to ensure other PST swimmers create the same team bonds I have.
Aside from my desire to lead the team well, I believe I also have the skills and experience to do so. I know exactly how the progression goes: from figuring out how to put on a cap, to Sharpie-ing your events and heats on your hand, to aging out of the 50’s once you turn 13, to experiencing burnout and recovering from it. I would love to share what I’ve figured out -- as much from my failures as my successes -- and be a resource to the next generation of swimmers. I have already begun to lead, whether it was helping to plan the rallies for Measure UU, or forming the mentorship program. I also understand the context of the bigger swimming community. As PST’s athlete representative, I am learning about the inner workings of swimming; I have represented Piedmont in House of Delegate meetings and will continue to ensure athletes’ concerns are being heard.
I understand the value of hard work and believe I model consistency and persistence. When I first started in Piranha 0, practice was once a week for 30 minutes. As I continued to increase my number of practices (I remember my first morning practice vividly), I continued to get better, and my goals became loftier than just diving off the blocks at my first meet. Second by second, and often only by hundredths of a second, I’ve now gotten so much further than I ever expected.
My goal is to be an accessible captain that swimmers can talk to, to get through the tough spots and keep swimming. As I have begun to do with the mentoring program, I want the more experienced swimmers to be a resource and sounding board for younger swimmers, and provide a supportive space for my teammates to grow and achieve their swim goals so we can collectively meet our team vision of individual excellence. Ultimately, I want to ensure the retention of PST’s dedicated athletes who love the sport and competition.
And, I plan to bring back Wednesday morning breakfast! :)”
