We have a couple of staffing announcements for this Fall.
Firstly, I am excited to welcome Kelly Hughes to the coaching staff. Kelly will be working with the AG3/AG4 program and she is bringing a wealth of experience to our club. Kelly is a former Canadian National Team swimmer having represented us at the 1978 Commonwealth Games, 1978 World Championships, and 1979 Pan AM Games. Kelly has coached clubs across the York Region for the last 20 years and has successfully coached athletes at the regional, Festival, Provincial Eastern, and Senior National levels.
In Kelly’s own words…
I am extremely pleased to join the Newmarket Stingrays Coaching Staff. I have been coaching competitive swimming in York Region for 20 years. Teaching and supporting the aspirations of young swimmers continues to excite and inspire me. I believe that building a strong team is the foundation upon which individual swimmers will thrive. Now more than ever, children need to feel securely anchored to a peer group that is positive, focussed and cohesive. My philosophy in a nutshell…..The coach sets the standard for enthusiasm, commitment and confidence. I'm looking forward to the journey ahead!
Additionally, the club is fired up to welcome back to the Newmarket Stingrays Colette Fitzgerald who will assume the role of Team Manager and Coach of the Wave program starting this October. Colette is a life-long Stingray, she has an unrivaled enthusiasm for our community and we are excited for her to be back with us.
In Colette’s own words…
I am delighted to be returning to the Stingrays family for another season, and I look forward to work collaboratively with new and old faces within the club. I have been fortunate enough to go through the club as a swimmer, and then as a coach and program director of SPLASH, and I am so happy to be stepping into a new role as Team Manager and Wave Jr/Sr Coach. I am looking forward to supporting the continued success of the Stingrays and facilitating programs that bring out the best in our young people. It is not lost on me that this season is one unlike others as we all continue to navigate protocols and mandates to keep our families healthy as we ride the tail end of this pandemic. Getting our kids up to speed and safely in the water is at the forefront of my mind. I am committed to ensuring the successful delivery of programmes that bring out the best in each valued swimmer. The club’s long-standing legacy of excellence is something I am immensely proud to be associated with.
Current Team Manager Danica Garbett will remain on staff to help with a transition of local responsibilities to Colette.
The club would like to thank outgoing AG3/AG4 coach Andrey Tihanyi who is leaving the club on good terms.
Andrey prepared an outgoing message…
Thank you for your support through this challenging season, and I wish you all the best going forward. It has been an absolute pleasure meeting and working with so many great people, and I am excited to follow the growth and successes of the club going into the future. I will continue on my coaching journey by following my passion and interests in exercise and sport science, and I hope to be back on deck in the near future where I can watch and cheer on Stingray swimmers. A special thank you to Dave, Edit, Sam, and Danica for creating such a great working environment.
All the best, and good luck this season!
With less than two weeks to the launch of the 2021-2022 season information about season launch will be coming out rapidly. With the staff committed and in place we encourage everyone to log on and register.
