Ethan Smith Selected to National Diversity Select Camp in California

CMA swimmer, Ethan Smith was selected to participate in USA Swimming’s 2021 National Diversity Select Camp. The camp will be held in person at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, California October 21-24, 2021. 2020 Tokyo Olympians who have attended this camp in previous years include: Simone Manuel, Jay Litherland, Torri Huske and Natalie Hinds.

“We’re thrilled to have one of our own Ethan Smith participating in the National Diversity Select Camp said CMA Head Coach, Marcel Da Ponte. “The skills they will learn from this experience is something they’ll keep with them forever. I’m excited to see how they grow not only in the pool, but also as a leader in their community.”

The National Diversity Select Camp hosts swimmers between the ages of 14 and 16, and selection is based on times swum at USA Swimming-sanctioned events. This camp consists of top athletes from each competition category who represent an underrepresented community and/or ethnically underrepresented population that is less than 10% of the current USA Swimming membership. Each athlete selected for the camp will be provided with lodging, meals, ground transportation to/from the designated airport and full airfare. There will be 48 different clubs represented this year. The entire list of camp participants, including coaching staff, may be found  here.

Ethan will be among the top swimmers in his respective age group. With a total of 55 swimmers, the camp aims to empower athletes to:

• Demonstrate the viability of cultural success in swimming.
• Assist in recruiting more swimmers and coaches from diverse communities to the sport of swimming.
• Achieve performance excellence at every level of the sport.
• Expound the benefits and value of participating in the sport of swimming.
• Develop positive leaders and role models that others from diverse backgrounds can emulate.
