2021 October Challenge #2 - Meet Recap

This past weekend, 12 UPAC Sharks competed at the 2021 October Challenge #2, at the King County Aquatic Center. It was an interesting environment without spectators, but the Sharks came ready to race! I will shout out 1 or 2 performances from each athlete below, but first, a HUGE thank you to Coach Preston, Coach Abhi, and Coach Elena for their help in keeping our athletes safe, prepared for competition, and observant of all Covid guidelines. I could not be more proud of how this group represented UPAC!

Some performances of note:

Grant Bellin (11) had a tremendous meet, finishing 1st or 2nd for the 12u group in every event. His meet was topped-off by a great 50 Backstroke, where he cracked the 30 second barrier with a time of 29.70.

Jonah Bergerson (14) crushed his 100 Free, dropping over 2 seconds from his best time for a final time of 55.41.

Liam Cotter (13) posted personal bests all over the place and swam his way to a sub-minute 100 Free for the first time, finishing with a 59.95!

Davis Horton (12) showed great drive in the Breaststroke, finishing 2nd and 3rd for his age group in the 100 and 50, respectively, and also broke the 30 second barrier in the 50 Free with a time of 29.08!

Tessa Hurguy (10) showed great grit and determination by overcoming some setbacks and came away with 3 personal bests! I was most impressed by her 50 Breast, where she kept her focus on her recovery and got under 45 seconds!

Alex Karpenko (12) finished in the top-3 for his age group and posted personal bests in every event! His 200 IM of 2:28.88 and 50 Free of 27.61, especially stand out.

Audrey Keigley (12) swam a stellar 100 Fly, dropping over 10 seconds and finishing top-10 for 12u with a time of 1:15.69!

Audrey LaTendresse (11) raced herself to a new personal best in the 50 Free, finallllllly (her words) getting under 33 seconds with a time of 32.22!

Brooklyn Learned (11) had a great meet across the board, but I was especially impressed with her 500 Free, where she was able to hold a consistent pace and dropped over 20 seconds, finishing with a 6:08.56!

Gaby Lopez (13) also had a wholly impressive meet, including swimming her first official sub-minute 100 Free (sorry, Mr. Pic’s stopwatch doesn’t count) in a 59.26!

Greta Patterson (12) had her highest placing in the Backstrokes (5th place in the 50), but she made the most improvement in the 200 Free where she dropped over 10 seconds and finished with a 2:30.81.

Emma Slagle (11) broke 2 huge barriers. First, she dropped about 8 seconds in her 100 Free to get below 1:10, with a 1:09.95. Then, she dropped about 9 seconds in the 100 Breast to get below 1:30, with a 1:26.66!

Great job, Sharks! The next meet on the calendar is the UPAC hosted Golden Gobbler Classic on November 19-20. Registration deadline is November 10. Let's get excited for more great racing!
