In what has become known as one of the premier mid-season meets for the region’s finest swimmers, athletes from across New Jersey went head-to-head at Rutgers University for the Holiday Classic XXXIV. There were hundreds of swimmers from 25 different teams competing. Just qualifying for this meet (and getting in) is notable! With most events having dozens of fast swimmers, NJB’s three attending athletes grabbed a few top-16 scoring places, some Best Times, and some big cuts, finishing 16th overall.
Zach Bezold earned a Speedo Sectionals cut in the 200 Breast, finishing 21 out of 50 swimmers.
Matt Freund had a busy weekend, with 8 of his 10 swims as Personal Bests. Despite some stiff competition, he made Finals in the 100 Fly, finishing 10th; 200 Fly finishing 4th; 200 Free, finishing 11th; and in the 400 IM. In the process, he paved his way with Speedo Sectionals cuts in the 100 Fly, 100 Free, 200 Fly, 200 Free, and 400 IM, and USA Swimming’s Futures Championships cuts in the 200 Fly. He also set new team records in the 200 Fly and 400 IM.
Hannah Wilson proved age isn’t everything this weekend. One of the younger swimmers at the meet, she earned Personal Bests in every one of her 10 splashes, including a drop of -48.08 in her 1650 and -11.35 in her 500 Free. For her efforts she earned Eastern Zones Age Group Championship cuts in the 100 Free, 1650 Free (just shy of a Sectionals cut!), 200 Back, 200 Free, 400 IM, 50 Free, and 500 Free. With times like that she touched in top places including an 8th Place finish in the 400 IM, 4th Place finishes in the 200 and 500 Free, and an amazing 2nd Place finish in the 1650! Set also revised the team record board with new times in the 50 Free, 200 Free, 500 Free, 1650 Free, 100 Back, 200 Back, 200 IM, and 400 IM.
Congrats to these three- you guys made us proud! Next up, the NDAC Winter Festival on 1/8-1/9 in Montgomery, NY.
Have a Wonderful Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year!
