Coaches’ Corner

Welcome Coach Ashley!

UPAC is excited to welcome (back) Ashley Jones to our coaching staff! Ashley brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the pool deck and will be able to offer an immediate positive impact to our athletes.

Coach Ashley was raised right here in the greater Tacoma area with a deep love for swimming.  She has a combined swimming and coaching background for the better part of 20 years.  Prior to joining UPAC as a coach in 2007, she swam competitively and played polo for Mt. Tahoma High School.  She worked for over ten years for The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties as an Aquatics Director, and has coached swimming at clubs all over our area in different capacities; UPAC, Ohana, the Lakewood YMCA, and the Morgan Family Y.  She has worked with swimmers of all age groups and she is truly passionate about giving back to the community. "I want to give back the skills and training my coaches and mentors have instilled in me all those years ago. Coaching provides the opportunity to make a positive difference in a person’s life and I look forward to strengthening that mission here at UPAC.”

Ashley’s primary responsibility will be the lead coach for the Silver A group, though she may fill gaps in other groups, as needed (more below).

Safe Travels, Coach Abhi!

Coach Abhi is off on a month-long journey to visit family in India. While we will miss his presence on deck, we wish him a great trip and safe travels!

To cover the coaching gap created by his absence, the Silver B and Bronze A groups will have different coaches over the month. Coach Ashley will cover the Silver B group, while the Bronze A may see a variety of faces.

Changes to Bronze Groups Practice Times

To accommodate the Curtis Girls Water Polo program, and to ensure that the pool is available for UPAC use right at the expected time, we will be making a slight change to both Bronze group training times. These changes will go into effect on Monday, March 7th, and will run until Friday, May 27th.

Bronze B :

5:15pm to 5:30pm - dryland

5:30pm to 6:30pm - swim

Bronze A :

6:15pm to 6:30pm - dryland

6:30pm to 7:30pm - swim

A Note on Swim Meets

This last weekend, UPAC hosted our 3rd swim meet of the 2021-2022 season, and it was a resounding success! Not only were we able to provide a safe environment and fun atmosphere for all athletes, but we were represented by over 60 athletes through the sessions! It is a great sense of pride for our club to be able to offer these high-level competition opportunities for the athletes of the greater Puget Sound area. It also takes an absolute ton of work to put these meets together! What you don’t see in the results is all the hours spent planning and organizing by a group of UPAC parents and supporters.

I want to take a moment to recognize some of those who contributed to the February Fly-In:

Mel Bellin - Co-Meet Director

Kayla Keigley - Co-Meet Director

John Cotter - Co-Meet Director/Volunteer Extraordinaire

Bruce Seiber - Meet Referee (HAPPY BIRTHDAY!)

Dan Forrest - Meet Manager/System 6/Technical Wiz

Ashley Slagle - Head of Volunteering

Erin Hurguy - Head of Hospitality

Yuri Karpenko - Live Streaming

Veronica Link - Fundraising Lead

Thank you all so much! We are on a hiatus from solo hosting meets until September. Enjoy your well-deserved break!

If anyone is interested in contributing to our next meet, please let me know! We would certainly welcome the help.
