YFD Senior Spotlight: 12 Questions with Luca Shapiro

 

1) How long have you been on YFD?

Four years

 

2) Why did you choose the school you will attend next year?

Clark University in Worcester.  It's a great school and they offered me a roster spot on the college swim team.

 

3) Do you know what you want to study? If so, what?

Probably Computer Science

 

4) What is your favorite memory of being on YFD?

Attending the championship meet in Boston and playing cards with my teammates in the lobby of the hotel during the 4-hour blackout.

 

5) What is the hardest set you can remember doing?

100 100s at the Florida training camp.

 

6) What is your favorite Amine story?

When Covid hit Amine was relentless about finding everyone a place to swim.  For a few weeks I wound up swimming in someone's backyard pool in Long Island.

 

7) If you could go back in time and tell yourself something as a younger swimmer, what would it be?

Concentrate on the drill form and think about the purpose of each drill.

 

8) How did you balance academics and being a competitive swimmer?

I try not waste time during the week and catch up on the weekends when I need to.

 

9) What is your favorite pre-meet meal?

Pasta

 

10) What is your favorite event and why?

200 Fly is my strongest event - I think my fly form is better than my other strokes and I tend to do better at longer distances.

 

11) What is your proudest accomplishment to date?

Qualifying for the ISCA Team Championship meet in St. Petersburg, Florida

 

12) Do you have any advice for the younger swimmers on the team who might want to swim collegiately? 

Fill out a lot of college recruiting forms.
