Peddie boys finish second, girls third at Easterns Swimming

2/27/2012
In a spirited competition throughout a hard-fought weekend, the 112th annual Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships came to a close Saturday night at La Salle University's Kirk Natatorium in Philadelphia. Leading after Day One, the Peddie boys (438) slipped from the top spot to sit behind Germantown Academy (475) in the runner-up spot, while the Falcon girls finished third behind host Germantown (533), and Episcopal Academy (412). Mercersburg girls checked out with 322 points.

Peddie's second-place position featured the sweep of the relays. Senior Cal Rohde, junior Forrest Davis, senior Ryan Signorin and post-grad Tom Duvall combined for a 1:33.02 in the 200-yard medley. Sophomore Patrick Park, junior Alex Rosen, Davis and senior Jeremy Wong sprinted to the 200 free win clocked in 1:24.76 over the Penn Charter quartet of Connor McGoldrick, Harry Wood, Bobby Wurtz and Jamal Willis (1:24.88). For the sweep, the 400 freestyle relay team of Park (46.78), Signorin (46.26), Rohde (46.45) and Wong (46.45) won their race in decisive fashion with a time of 3:04.16, bettering the Germantown all-senior foursome of Adam Sjoholm, Nelson Glendinning, Justin Tang and Arthur Frayler who touched the wall in 3:06.91.

Davis claimed the third piece of individual gold hardware for the Falcons when he finished the 100 breaststroke in 56.79. Last year Davis posted a 58.63 as the Falcons pulled off a 1-2-3 sweep of the event to clinch the team title. Besides Davis' win, Park claimed the 100 fly title in 49.99, and Duvall got his fingertips on the pad first to take the 200 freestyle in 1:39.91.

Freshman Zhongtian Han notched a 12th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke 1:01.77 and tallied his first Easterns points with an 18th place in the 50 free (22.99) on Friday night.

Duvall logged a 4:30.69 in the 500 free for third and Signorin added a fourth with a 4:31.59. Germantown's Frayler just missed a national interscholastic mark in the 500 with a 4:17.96. Jack Conger of Good Counsel set the record two weeks prior at 4:17.51 during the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Championships. Frayler missed a second win by nine-hundredths of a second in the 200 free to Duvall (1:39.91-1:40.00).

Wong finished his high school career with a silver in the 100 free (46.32) and Rosen swam a 47.37 for sixth in the A Final. Rohde contributed a fifth in the 100 backstroke (52.47).

On the girls' side, freshman Laura Morley was one of the biggest stories of the meet for Peddie, as she swam her career-best readout in the 100 breaststroke, blasting into the wall at 1:05.62 for third place in the A Final. Swimming in lane six, Morley touched fifth at the 50 and then poured it on to secure the bronze by five-hundredths (.05) over Catherine Levins of Mercersburg.

"I was not expecting to swim as fast as I did," said Morley. "My goal was to just go out and race the girls next to me. I had not hit that time (1:05) yet for the season, so after touching the wall I was so happy to do my personal best."

Senior Meghan McGuirk 1:09.12 picked up 15th place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.12.

In the 100 free, senior Molly Mucciarone placed fourth, getting to the wall in 52.08. Freshman Emily Schroeder took 11th in 54.21 and junior Brynne Follman finished 12th in 54.31.

Peddie placed two in the B Final of the 500 free. Junior Sarah Lloyd took ninth with a 5:09.76, while sophomore Melissa Yau took 12th in 5:18.36.

Senior Kendy Nangle finished second (57.14) in the 100 backstroke. Senior Katie Fago swam a 1:00.54 for ninth place and senior Elizabeth Jacobi was fifth (17th place) in the C Final with a time of 1:04.29.

In the final relay of the night, the Falcon team of McGuirk, Schroeder, sophomore Anna Wisniewski and Follman finished third in the 400 free relay in a time of 3:33.55.
