SASKATCHEWAN SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMER TAKES BRONZE AT THE FINA WORLD MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Cathy New is a true athlete for life and a role model for young women in Saskatchewan. At the age of 50 the Regina Synchro athlete placed 3rd in Riccione, Italy at the FINA World Masters Championships on June 17th. In the 50-59 age category there were 17 soloists from all over the world. Her Technical Solo, swum to a Spanish rendition of “Hotel California”, ranked her in second place. After a closely fought battle, New finished the competition in third place overall with her free solo to Elton John’s ‘Don’t Let the Sun go Down on me’.
Afterwards Cathy stated “I had really good swims for both my events so am very pleased that all my hard work and training paid off.” Cathy trained 8-10 hours a week preparing for this competition both on her own and with her coach Kim Howe.
Also in attendance at this meet were Amanda Brace and Emily Lewis of Regina Synchro. In the 20-29 age category, Emily Lewis placed 36th in her solo and in the 20-29 duet category Lewis with duet partner Amanda Brace placed 41st.
