MSA Annual Awards Banquet

Meridian Swim Association held its annual Awards Banquet on Monday, July 29, 2013 at Highland Baptist Church in Meridian.  An affiliate of USA Swimming, MSA presents its athletes with awards, recognizing overall accomplishments earned during the 2012-2013 swim year, encompassing both short course and long course seasons.  A total of 80 swimmers came through MSA's program this past year.  The program offers competitive swimming, stroke development and meet participation throughout the state and southeast region.

Meridian's Outstanding Swimmer Award went to Rhet Hailey, age 15.  Rhet posted the highest points earned from events swam during meets this year, bringing home eleven 1st places, eleven 2nd places and twenty-three 3rd places.  Rhet also earned a place on the Mississippi Swimming Zones long course team, competing in Rockwall, TX, and competed at short course Sectionals in Greensboro, NC, bringing home 13th place regionally in the 50 free.  Megan Heggie, age 9, came in 2nd for High Points Award with four 1st, seven 2nd and twelve 3rd places.  Lauren Kirchhefer, age 9, came in 3rd for High Points, with one 1st, three 2nd, and eight 3rd places.  All three swimmers qualified and participated at Short Course State Championship Meet in Laurel.  Megan Heggie also participated and made finals in all events at Long Course State Championship Meet, held at Delta State University in Cleveland, MS.  The point system is regulated by USA Swimming and allows for comparison of quality of performances across strokes, distances and events, as well as between age groups.

MSA's Most Improved Award went to the swimmer cutting the most time from events compared to the previous year.  Most Improved male swimmer went to Viktor Lobdell, age 6, cutting a total of 141 seconds.  Most Improved female swimmer went to Megan Heggie, age 9, cutting a total of 210 seconds.

MSA Coaches' Award was presented to the swimmer displaying exemplary efforts at practice and meets, always giving his/her best without complaint.  Male swimmer Coaches' Award went to Zach Hodges.  Female Coaches' Award went to Marina Olmstead.
