Phillips wins Open Water state championship

Ten swimmers from the Owensboro Marlins competed at the Kentucky Swimming State Open Water Championships held this weekend at Freeman Lake in Elizabethtown, with Samantha Phillips shining brightest.

Phillips won the Girls' 13-14-year-old age division, swimming 3 kilometers in a time of 42:18.97. The Marlins dominated the Girls' 13-14 age division, with Mia Bruno placing second and Isabelle Velez placing fifth.

The Boys' 15-and-over team of Xavier Evans, Andrew St. Clair, Eli Cooper, and Ben Duncan placed third in the relay portion of the competition, with a combined time for the 4K of 2:58:55.34.

In the Girls' 15-and-over division, Annie Pfeifer placed fourth and Maddie Beebe placed eight.

In the Boys' 11-12 age division 2K race, Cort Hobelmann placed fifth.

Phillips, Bruno, and Pfeifer qualified to represent Kentucky Swimming at the 2015 Southern Zones Open Water Championship Friday through Sunday in Seven Lakes, North Carolina.
