Piranhas Excel at the SW District/Blue Ridge Region Meet

Piranhas Excel at SW District/Blue Ridge Region Meet

We sent 25 swimmers to Christiansburg for the Southwest District & Blue Ridge Region Championships.  It was a highly competitive meet with many swimmers exceeding the J.O. and Senior Champs time standards that capped the entries.  Here are the individual highlights for our swimmers.

Silver Group

Lauren Mazur works very hard in practice and it shows every time she competes. A small reminder to accelerate in and out of her turns led to her dropping almost 4 seconds in her 100 back, qualifying her for the Regional meet. She applied this same tactic to her freestyle and dropped an impressive 56 seconds in her 500 Free to finish in 7:48.93.

Gold Group

Matthew Murray swam well and dropped time in almost every event he swam in his pursuit of a Regional qualifying time. He achieved that goal by finishing his 100 Breast in a time of 1:18.50. Matthew also showed his determination by pushing himself in the 1000 Free, dropping almost 10 seconds and finishing in 12:24.68.

Evan Schonfelder was able to push through a little disappointment in his early swims to drop time in his 50 Fly for a season best 38.79. He also rallied in the 50 Free to finish with a 30.88.

Kyle Sennett had some great swims reaching the finals in 5 events. He not only got another Y Regions cut but succeeded in dropping 13 seconds in his 200 IM. Kyle’s backstroke was his strongest stroke this weekend with time drops in the 50, 100, and 200 events.

Cameron St. Clair decided that just breaking 6:00 in the 500 Free was not challenging enough so he set his sights on a new goal of 5:48. He came within 2 seconds of that by finishing in an impressive 5:50.84 and chopping almost 11 seconds off his previously best time. In addition to that, Cameron decided it was time to break the 30 second mark in his 50 Free and swam 29.42.

Brendan Whitfield continued to improve by dropping time in almost every event he swam and making it to finals in 5 events. He dropped over 9 seconds in his 200 Back, finishing in 2:36.02 and by dropping over 6 seconds in his 100 Breast he achieved a season best 1:28.26. In the finals of his 100 Fly he dropped almost 4 seconds to finish with a 1:15.87.
