Jonathan Gomez wins the 200 Butterfly at the 2016 Arena Pro Swim Series in Charlotte, NC last Month.
In a star filled final heat at the Arena Pro Swim Series, Jonathan Gomez faced off against some of our sport’s biggest names, most notably, Tyler Clary (2012 200 BK gold medalist, 200 Fly 5th place finisher). Jonathan led the race from start to finish posting a new best time 1:57.36.
The time achieved in the event is currently the 2nd fastest time performed by any USA Swimming registered athlete in 2016, faster than the likes of NCAA champion Joseph Schooling of University of Texas and SCY American record holder Jack Conger, whom also swam the event on the same weekend. The time also ranks Jonathan 27th in the World in his best event.
Although, the time is .39 short of an automatic Olympic berth, his time sits as one of the first non-automatic qualifying time to be invited to the Games this summer. We will find out on July, 3rd with more certainty on Jonathan’s ultimate goal but we remain extremely optimistic and hopeful.
